Song Ratings: Week Ending January 28, 2021

Music ratings are divided into two weekly posts: one for albums, and one for individual songs; this is the song post. Songs achieve their positions on the weekly Billboard & Rolling Stone lists based on three major metrics: sales, streaming, and airplay. Below are three charts: the top 25 songs of the week based on total U.S. sales, the top 25 based on total U.S. streaming and the top 40 songs of the week based on U.S. pop radio airplay.

For the third consecutive week Olivia Rodrigo's 'drivers license' topped the pure sales chart with around 17,100 sales in the tracking week ending January 28. Those sales accounted for around $15,500 in revenue though the bulk of the song's revenue this week came from streaming (~$207,500). The Weekend retained the second position with 'Blinding Lights' which has perhaps made a resurgence due to his upcoming Super Bowl half-time performance. That song was up to 12,700 sales this week versus 11,300 last week. Ariana Grande's '34+35' fell out of the top 25 this week, logging only 2,100 pure sales this week (27th) despite ranking in the top 5 on both the streaming chart and the radio chart; 'positions' was also unable to make the chart (1,800). In its first week of availability, Sabrina Carpenter's 'Skin' seemed to benefit from the 'Drivers License' hype, delivering 3,700 pure sales and $46,700 in total revenue (includes streaming). Outside of the top 25 was SZA's 'Good Days' (2,100), Doja Cat's 'Streets' (1,800), and Morgan Wallen's 'Somebody's Problem' (1,700), Note: this list only includes songs that had over $35.4K revenue for the week; a song with less than $35.4K in revenue could theoretically have more sales than the 25th ranked song on this list and it would not appear here.

'Drivers License' also again dominated the weekly streaming chart, pulling 37.29 million U.S. streams, and while that's down heavily from last week's 53.14 million, it's still more than double second-ranked 'Good Days' (17.79 million) which itself was on par with last week's numbers. '34+35' from Ariana Grande dipped to the third position this week, losing about 6 million streams (to 13.78 million) from last week, but still better than album-mate 'Positions' which just missed the top 25 at 8.158 million. Also of note outside the chart was Sabrina Carpenter's 'Skin' (7.797 million), Taylor Swift's 'Willow' (7.329 million), Machine Gun Kelly's 'My Ex's Best Friend' (7.083 million), Tate McRae's 'You Broke Me First' (6.648 million), and Justin Bieber's 'Holy' (5.921 million). Note: this list only includes songs that had over $35.4K revenue for the week; a song with less than $35.4K in revenue could theoretically have more streams than the 25th ranked song on this list and it would not appear here.

Ariana Grande's 'Positions' has now spent 7 consecutive weeks atop the pop radio chart though it appears that impressive run may be coming to an end soon as the song was down over 1100 plays from last week, raking in just over 15,600 (vs. ~16,700). Based on current trajectories though, it appears that if the song is overtaken next week it will likely be by Grande's other major hit, '34+35' which itself was up over 2000 plays from last week, to 14,313.  That was enough for the second-most week-to-week increased plays; however, the song that most increased was Olivia Rodrigo's 'drivers license' which was up nearly 3000 to 8,096 and ranked 10th on the week. New on the list this week was Jason DeRulo's 'Lifestyle' which logged 1,738 plays & 4.02m audience (up from last week's minuscule 396), Zara Larsson's 'Talk About Love' (787/674K audience), and Loona's 'Star' (640/756K). Also below the top 25 was Miley Cyrus's 'Prisoner' (2,753/5.605m), and Ava Max's 'Head and My Heart' (1,672/4.01m).
