Song Ratings: Week Ending February 4, 2021

Music ratings are divided into two weekly posts: one for albums, and one for individual songs; this is the song post. Songs achieve their positions on the weekly Billboard & Rolling Stone lists based on three major metrics: sales, streaming, and airplay. Below are three charts: the top 25 songs of the week based on total U.S. sales, the top 25 based on total U.S. streaming and the top 40 songs of the week based on U.S. pop radio airplay.

In a somewhat surprising development, BTS's 'Dynamite' closely edged out Olivia Rodrigo's 'drivers license' this week in pure sales: 13,200 vs. 12,700. This did not have any meaningful impact on their placement in either the Billboard Hot 100 or Rolling Stone Top 100 as 'license' had much higher streaming & radio numbers, which helped propel it to 223.7K song units compared to ~38K for 'Dynamite.' Morgan Wallen continued to have success on the chart as his scandal did not break until the end of the tracking week. His 'Wasted on You' ranked third on the week with ~9,000 pure sales while 'More Than My Hometown' (6,700), 'Sand in My Boots' (6,000), and '7 Summers' (5,000) also placed in the top 25. Of note below the top 25 was Ariana Grande's '34+35' (1,800) & 'Positions' (1,600), SZA's 'Good Days' (1,600), and Cardi B's 'WAP' (1,400). Note: this list only includes songs that had over $36.2K revenue for the week; a song with less than $36.2K in revenue could theoretically have more sales than the 25th ranked song on this list and it would not appear here.

Another week, another dominating streaming performance by 'drivers license'. After the astronomical 67 million U.S. streams the song received in its first week, it has been slowly falling back down to earth, logging just over 28 million in the tracking week ending February 4. Though this is down a bit from last week's 37.2 million, it's still more than 10 million more than second-ranked 'Good Days' from SZA which was at 16.35 million. Elsewhere, Doja Cat's 'Streets' and Ariana Grande's '34+35' flipped positions this week with the former up to third (15.47 million) and the latter in a far-fourth (11.75 million). New in the top 25 this week is Lil Durk's 'Finesse Out the Gang Way' (11.14 million) and 'Should've Ducked' (9.12 million), as well as Jack Harlow's 'What's Poppin' (7.84 million) which ranked 27th last week (8.138m). Of note below the 25 is: Luke Comb's 'Better Together' (7.713m), Ariana Grande's 'Positions' (7.653m), Justin Bieber's 'Anyone' (7.533m), Billie Eilish's 'Therefore I Am' (6.819m), Taylor Swift's 'Willow' (6.75m), and Tate McRae's 'You Broke Me First' (6.671m). BTS's 'Dynamite' had 4.822 million. Note: this list only includes songs that had over $36.2K revenue for the week; a song with less than $36.2K in revenue could theoretically have more streams than the 25th ranked song on this list and it would not appear here.

As predicted in last week's post, Ariana Grande's 'positions' was dethroned from the top 'position' in pop radio airplay by album-mate '34+35'. The former dropped to the third spot with 15,193 plays, but ranked second among total audience where is just a tad over 50.2 million. The latter ranked first in both metrics (15,898 plays/50.79 million) and was second in increased plays, up 1,540 from last week. Topping that metric was, again, 'drivers license' from Olivia Rodrigo which was up 2,675 plays and ranked ninth on the overall list with 10,802. 'Skin' - Sabrina Carpenter's answer to 'drivers license' - ranked 34th on the week with just over 1000 plays (1,007) that reached an audience of 1.253 million. This was nearly double its numbers from last week when it logged only 521 plays. Other songs of note below the top 25 include Jason DeRulo's 'Lifestyle' (2,850/7.322 million), Bad Bunny's 'Dakiti' (2,850/8.167m), Miley Cyrus's 'Prisoner' (1,019/2,059m), and Zara Larsson's 'Talk About Love' (943/917,000). Ava Max's 'Kings and Queens' moved to the recurrent chart this week, and topped it with 5,910 plays while BTS's 'Dynamite' had 2,553 plays on that chart.
