Top Streaming (SVOD) Ratings: Week Ending March 27, 2022

Below are the weekly streaming/video-on-demand (SVOD) ratings for the week ending March 27, 2022. The chart below includes the top 10 original programs, top 10 movies, and top 10 acquired programs from Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV+ measured on total minutes of watch-time. The data represents only viewing within the U.S. and comes from Nielsen Media Research.

The second season launch of Netflix's 'Bridgerton' propelled it to the top of the weekly streaming chart with nearly 2.55 billion minutes of watch-time. This was the most that a streaming program has been viewed in a single week since 'Inventing Anna' logged 3.28 billion in the week ending Feb. 20, 2022. This, despite second-season viewing of 'Bridgerton' only counting for the last 3 days of the tracking week while that 'Anna' total was from its first full week. Versus the first season, this total was on par with what 'Bridgerton' had in its first full week of availability (2.65 billion in the week ending Jan. 3, 2021), and more than double what it had in its first 3 days (1.2 billion in the week ending Dec. 27, 2020).

Elsewhere on the chart, Netflix's 'Is It Cake?' jumped to #2 among originals, 'The Last Kingdom' dipped to #3, and 'Human Resources' managed to hit #9 in its first full week after missing the chart last week. On the movie-front, Disney+'s 'Turning Red' (977 million) had a short-lived reign of only 2 weeks, falling to #2 this week behind Netflix's 'The Adam Project' (1.2 billion) which has shown impressive stability thus far. By comparison, Disney+'s 'Encanto' ruled at #1 for 10 consecutive weeks, 9 of which logged over 1 billion minutes. Finally, 'NCIS' and 'Cocomelon' remained 1-2 among acquired programming.

What a Top 150 Cable Chart Looks Like With Reruns Included: 4/4/22

I've seen a lot of discourse lately about what ShowBuzzDaily's cable rankers would look like if they included reruns. I personally do not care at all about rerun ratings - I've consistently removed them from every broadcast & cable ratings post I've ever done on this blog, but I do recognize that some people do care which is why I began including them in separate posts earlier last year. I think they unnecessarily clutter a normal cable ranker so I actually do appreciate that ShowBuzz limits their charts only to originals.

With that being said, below is just an example of what the chart would look like if reruns were included. The chart is from Monday, April 4, 2022 which is the most-recent Monday in which I have full cable data, and I think Monday is fairly representative of how the charts look like for the rest of the week. Rerun programming takes up more than half of the top 150 and on this chart, the #150-ranked program was #68 on ShowBuzz's list of the same day. I only included reruns up until #150 and then limited the list to the remainder of the 150 ShowBuzz originals with what their ranking would be in a rerun-included list.

Annoyingly, ShowBuzzDaily's data somehow mistakenly listed multiple airings of "Castle" (Lifetime) as originals even though they appear in my chart as reruns, so that was not super fun to rectify, but in the interest of making the originals here identical to their chart, they are listed as such. Additionally, this will not be a regular thing because I much prefer to do ratings on a weekly basis.

Academy Awards/Oscars Nielsen Ratings History (1953-present)

Below are the Nielsen ratings for every telecast of the Academy Awards. The ceremony was first aired on TV in 1953 after years of either being broadcast on the radio (1930-32, 1939-52) or not broadcast at all (1929, 1934-38). Household (HH) ratings are available for every telecast except for the 1961 show which aired during a Nielsen black week, 18-49 ratings are first available in 1992, and total viewership in 1974 (number of households is provided for 1953-73). Be aware that Nielsen did not introduce people-meters until 1987, so all viewership figures prior to that point are merely estimates Nielsen made at a later date.

Note: Only one source ever reported the numbers for the 1966 awards show: a Variety article from June 1966. That show also aired during a Nielsen black week, but ABC apparently made a special request to have the telecast nationally rated, so I believe this is the reason that such a massive 56.0 rating never appears in Nielsen's top 50 highest-rated list. This was also the first Oscars telecast to air in color so that could potentially be a reason why it was so highly rated. But also, the number could just be completely wrong since it is so much higher than anything else. Take that one with a grain of salt.

Top Streaming (SVOD) Ratings: Week Ending March 13, 2022

Below are the weekly streaming/video-on-demand (SVOD) ratings for the week ending March 13, 2022. The data represents only viewing within the U.S. and comes from Nielsen Media Research.

It was a strong week in streaming with a number of high-performing launches. Disney+'s new film 'Turning Red' easily took the top spot with just over 1.7 billion minutes of watch-time in its first 3 days of release, outdoing Netflix's new film 'The Adam Project' which collected 1.36 billion. With that, 'Encanto' dipped to #3 in the movie rankings (783 million), its first week not at #1 since the week ending Dec. 26, 2021 where it debuted at #7. In original programming, the fifth-season drop of Netflix's 'The Last Kingdom' logged an impressive 1.42 billion minutes in its first 5 days, slightly edging out 'Pieces of Her' which climbed to #2 in its first full week of availability. Finally, after 3 straight weeks atop the originals list, 'Inventing Anna' dipped to #3 with 812 million minutes.

18-49 Viewership to Ratings Converter

I'm introducing a new tool on this site which automatically converts 18-49 viewership into 18-49 ratings. The tool is available by clicking here or on the sidebar of the site under the "Other Data" heading. It is currently programmed to return ratings back until the 2004-05 TV season, but if I'm ever able to find Universe Estimates from the 2001-02, 2002-03, or 2003-04 seasons then those will be added as well.

I'm also hoping to add a (potentially more helpful) inverse calculation where the 18-49 rating would be inputted and the estimated 18-49 viewership is returned. That is slightly trickier because the calculator would have to return a range of values that fit within the rating, so I'm currently working on figuring out the best way to do that without having to calculate every single range by hand. If anyone has any ideas and/or is proficient in Javascript, please feel free to provide suggestions.

I'm happy to announce that the inverse calculation tool is also now available by clicking here. This tool will take any 1-decimal or 2-decimal 18-49 rating and return the corresponding range of 18-49 viewership figures from a particular season. This also goes back to the 2004-05 season but hopefully will be expanded back if additional Universe Estimates are found. I'm also going to try to make some functionality that allows for the calculation of wider ranges from 1-decimal 18-49 inputs.

Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards Ratings (1995-present)

Below are the Nielsen ratings for every SAG Awards broadcast beginning with the first one back in 1995. The awards show aired on NBC for its first 3 years where it was easily managing over 10 million viewers, but then moved to TNT beginning in 1998 where it has aired ever since. Beginning in 2006 the show was simulcast between TNT and TBS where it was regularly averaging between 5 and 6 million viewers cumulatively. The numbers started declining beginning around 2016 where for the next several years it was pulling between 2 and 3 million viewers. It hit a viewership low in 2021, logging just 957,000 viewers, but rebounded in 2022 up to 1.84 million. Note: no ratings info is known for the 1998 show, and the only ratings info available for the 1999 show was that it pulled a 2.7 cable rating which roughly translates to a 2.0-2.1 U.S. HH rating.

The Walking Dead (AMC): Ratings Recap

AMC's 'The Walking Dead' premiered October 31, 2010 to a really strong 2.7/7 adults 18-49 rating/share and 5.35 million viewers, averaging nearly a 2.7 rating & 5.24 million over the course of its short first season and establishing itself as one of the top-rated cable shows of 2010. The show absolutely soared in the ratings over the next four seasons, rising to a 7.4 rating & 14.38 million viewers on-average for its fifth season in 2014 & 2015; easily making it the top-rated and most-viewed cable series at the time. The numbers slowly began declining after that, but were still monstrous compared to everything else on air: holding above 5.0 in the demo and 11 million viewers for the next two seasons before dipping to below a 2.0 rating & under 5 million viewers for its ninth season in 2018 & 2019. An 11th and final season began airing in late-summer/early-fall 2021 and has logged a 0.46 rating & 1.8 million viewers on-average for its first 16 episodes. The last 8 episodes are rumored to air in fall 2022.
