Music Ratings: Week Ending December 17, 2020

We're doing something a little different than usual as an experiment, and posting some music ratings which include U.S. sales & streaming data and airplay on U.S. radio. Below are the top songs on the radio U.S. Mainstream Top 40 chart and the top 25 albums on U.S. sales chart for the week of Dec. 11-17. Note that the radio ratings-week starts and ends two days later than the album week.

Leading the week on the radio was Ariana Grande's 'positions' which reached an audience of 53.4 million people through 16,487 radio plays across the U.S. this week. Only two artists had more than one song in the top 50 radio plays: Ariana Grande had '34+35' in addition to 'positions,' and Justin Bieber had 'Monster' in addition to 'Holy' & 'Lonely.' Other songs of note outside the top 20 list below include: Taylor Swift's 'willow' (2,427/7.40m), Conan Gray's 'Heather' (2,357/4.30m), Bad Bunny's 'DAKITI' (1,149/2.99m), and Shawn Mendes's 'Wonder' (620/1.60m). Topping the recurrent chart was Kane Brown's 'Be Like That' with 5,827 plays, and other songs of note from that chart include Harry Styles's 'Watermelon Sugar' (5,087) & 'Adore You' (3,944), Post Malone's 'Circles' (4,236), and Doja Cat's 'Say So' (3,002).

Top 10 Streaming (SVOD) Ratings: Week Ending November 29, 2020

Thanksgiving week was a big week on the streaming platforms as six different programs logged over 1 billion minutes of watch time - more than any other week since Nielsen began releasing this data back in August. Per usual, Netflix took 9 out of the top 10 spots this week with the second week of fourth season availability for 'The Crown' ranking number one with 2.22 billion streaming minutes. In second place was 'The Christmas Chronicles 2,' a sequel to the 2018 film 'The Christmas Chronicles,' which delivered 1.52 billion minutes. The first three days of second season availability for 'Virgin River' propelled it to number three on the week with 1.3 billion minutes while the third week of availability for 'Hillbilly Elegy' finally placed it on the weekly list with 787 million. Also of note, 'The Queen's Gambit' dropped down to 6th place this week (from 2nd), but the week-to-week viewership numbers remained remarkably stable, to 1.07 billion this week from 1.09 billion the prior week. The only non-Netflix program to make the list this week was, again, Disney+'s 'The Mandalorian' which saw a nice rise from the prior week to 1.21 billion minutes (vs. 939 million).

Various Program Ratings (Showtime): 2000-2007

There are a number of Showtime programs from between 2000 and 2007 that have very limited ratings data available and not nearly enough to construct full posts about them individually. There is an especially limited amount of available data for Showtime programs from prior to 2004 as Showtime rarely, if ever, divulged the ratings data for their shows. In a Washington Post article from 2001, it's mentioned that Nielsen themselves were actually also forbidden from releasing Showtime viewership data per an agreement with the network. It's stated that this agreement was unique and no other network had an agreement like to this. As a result, ratings data for shows such as 'Queer as Folk' or 'Dead Like Me' from 2004 & before is very difficult to find and I've included all the publicly available viewership figures below. Starting between 2007 and 2009, Showtime data became a bit more widespread and since 2010 has been relatively easy to access.

Nip/Tuck (FX): Ratings Recap

FX's 'Nip/Tuck' premiered July 22, 2003 to a 1.6 adults 18-49 rating with 3.7 million viewers and quickly established itself as the highest-rated new cable series among adults 18-49 averaging about 2.2 million (1.7 rating) and 3.24 million total viewers in its first season. A second season premiered in 2004 and built off that momentum, averaging a 2.0 18-49 rating and 3.76 million viewers, and the third season retained those numbers at 2.1 and 3.7 million viewers, concluding to a series-high 5.68 million viewers. Ratings began to slightly decline in the fourth season (2006) where it delivered 3.56 million viewers, and then fell even harder in the fifth season (2007-09) to 2.83 million viewers. A sixth and final season aired in 2009 & 2010 and the show ended its run with a modest 0.9 rating with 1.88 million viewers.

Raising the Bar (TNT): Ratings Recap

TNT's 'Raising the Bar' premiered September 1, 2008 to a dominating 2.1 adults 18-49 rating (2.837 million in that demo) and 7.74 million viewers, breaking the record for the biggest series launch ever on ad-supported cable (USA's 'The 4400' had the previous record of 7.407 million in 2004). The ratings tumbled hard after that, down to just 0.6 in the demo and 2.46 million viewers by the fifth episode of the season, and as low as 0.5 & 1.83 million at one point. A second season aired in the summer of 2009 and performed slightly better, regularly averaging between 0.7 & 0.9 in the demo and over 3 million viewers. Despite this, the show was cancelled and the final three episodes were burned off on Christmas Eve 2009 where they found a very small audience of just over a million.

Broadcast & Cable Nielsens: Week Ending June 10, 2007

Below are the Nielsen ratings for the 38th week of the 2006-07 television broadcast season; most reruns are excluded from the list. Final household, 18-49, and 25-54 ratings are provided, as are final viewership figuresThe second chart includes data for cable programs that aired this week.

Damages (FX): Ratings Recap

FX's 'Damages' premiered July 24, 2007 to a 0.9/3 adults 18-49 rating and 3.66 million viewers, and despite rising in the demo in its second week (to 1.0/3), it lost about 600K viewers to 2.93 million. It slowly continued losing viewers throughout its first season, falling as low as 1.16 million, but ended up averaging just under 2 million and was renewed for a second season. The second season premiered in January 2009 to a solid 1.72 million viewers, but fell nearly 1 million viewers in its first two weeks, down to 761,000 by week 3. From then on, it remained fairly stable the rest of the season, averaging about 956,000 viewers and a 0.3 in the demo. A third season premiered in January 2010 and pulled virtually identical numbers as the second season among viewership (down only slightly to 928,000), but lost a bit among adults 18-49 (0.2 in the demo). A fourth and fifth season of the show aired on DirecTV's Audience Network which is not rated by Nielsen.

Rellik (Cinemax) & Trackers (Cinemax): Ratings Recaps

Cinemax's 'Rellik' premiered April 13, 2018 to a minuscule 0.01 adults 18-49 rating and 58,000 viewers. It never really found an audience and concluded its six-episode run with an average of just 63,000 viewers. A different program, 'Trackers,' premiered June 5, 2020 to a dead zero 18-49 rating and 38,000 viewers, and somehow managed to crumble to a nearly invisible 11,000 viewers in its second week, but then pulled together a string of 0.01s in the demo and concluded its 6-episode run with a 42,000 viewership average.

Weeds (Showtime): Ratings Recap

Showtime's 'Weeds' premiered August 7, 2005 to 538,000 viewers, holding the majority of its lead-in, the series-finale of 'Queer as Folk' (547,000). The first season was fairly unsuccessful, averaging just 383,000 viewers, but things began picking up the next few seasons, up to 484,000 viewers in its second season (2006), 672,000 in its third (2007), and 969,000 in its fourth (2008). It reached a peak in its fifth season where it averaged over 1 million viewers (1.05 million) for the first and only time, and then slowly drifted down to 673,000 for its eighth and final season.

As the season progressed, the show maintained its numbers, finishing with a 1.6 rating and 2.9 million viewers despite a huge lead-in from the season finale of 'True Blood' (2.9 rating, 5.11 million). A second season premiered in 2010 and was down about three-tenths in the demo and over 500K viewers year-to-year, to 1.3 and 2.46 million. A third and final season premiered in 2011 but tumbled in the ratings, averaging just a 0.4 adults 18-49 rating and 1.02 million viewers. A total of 30 episodes aired over the course of 3 seasons.

Monk (USA): Ratings Recap

USA Network's 'Monk' premiered July 12, 2002 to a 2.0 adults 18-49 rating with 4.77 million viewers and averaged 4.34 million viewers in its first season. The show rose in the ratings in its second season, to 4.85 million, and continued its upward trajectory where it hit its best average viewership in the fourth season (5.22 million). It remained very successful throughout its run, averaging around or above 5 million viewers and a 1.3 adults 18-49 rating all the way through its final season. The show concluded in December 2009 to a series-high 2.4 rating and 9.44 million viewers.

Entourage (HBO): Ratings Recap

HBO's 'Entourage' premiered July 18, 2004 to a 1.89 million viewers, about half of what its 'Six Feet Under' lead-in received (3.66 million), and remained around that mark throughout its first season where it averaged 1.9 million viewers. Things began to pick up in the latter half of its second season (2005) where the show began to regularly average over 2 million viewers, and the trajectory continued into 2006 when the first half of the third season averaged 2.6 million. The show peaked in the second-half of the third season where it aired behind the final season of 'The Sopranos' and pulled an average of 3.5 million viewers. Aside from one low-rated season in 2008 (1.7 million), the remaining seasons of the show all averaged between 2 and 3 million viewers, and it concluded in September 2011 to the tune of 2.61 million. Note: the ratings in season 1 and 2 episode tables are based on households (HH) but switch to 18-49 beginning in season 3 as 18-49 data was not readily available prior to 2006.

HBO's 'Six Feet Under' premiered June 3, 2001 to 4.97 million viewers, down about a million from its strong 'Sex and the City' lead-in (5.93 million). As the season progressed it began running much closer to 'Sex' with less than a 50K viewer difference in the Jul. 15, 2001 installment (5.37 million vs. 5.33 million). The show closed out its first season to a series-best 7.06 million viewers, and averaged nearly 5.5 million over the course of the season. Viewership peaked in its second season (2002) where it averaged 5.65 million, but fell sharply in seasons three and four where it averaged 4.8 million & 3.7 million respectfully. A fifth and final season premiered in the summer of 2005 but aired on Mondays instead of Sundays for its first 5 episodes where it struggled: averaging only 2.06 million viewers. The move back to Sundays didn't drastically improve things, but the viewership for the last 7 episodes did have a noticeable increase to 2.79 million. The program concluded on August 21, 2005 to 3.9 million viewers having aired a total of 63 episodes. Note: household (HH) ratings are used in lieu of 18-49 ratings as 18-49 ratings were not available for the vast majority of this program's episodes.

Top 10 Streaming (SVOD) Ratings: Week Ending November 22, 2020

The first full week of fourth season availability pushed Netflix's 'The Crown' to the top spot on the weekly SVOD ratings. Its first day of release made it to last week's chart with 807 million minutes of watch time, but with a full seven days of data included now the show skyrocketed to 3.36 billion minutes. This ended the three-week #1 streak for 'The Queen's Gambit' which ticked down to the second spot this week with a still-impressive 1.09 billion minutes. Also of note, Disney+'s 'The Mandalorian' ranked fourth with 939 million minutes, edged out by Netflix's fan-favorite 'The Office' which logged 1.07 billion minutes. Other programs on the list this week include 'Schitt's Creek' (733 million), 'Grey's Anatomy' (731 million), and 'Criminal Minds' (560 million).

Ratings began to pick up in its fourth season (2001) which premiered to a then-high of 6.49 million viewers, averaged nearly 6 million viewers, and concluded with a strong 7.39 million. The show's fifth season continued the ratings climb, up over 1 million viewers on average to just over 7 million. The sixth and final season (2003-04) dipped just a bit to 6.6 million viewers, but the show concluded in February 2004 to a series-high 10.62 million.

2020 World Series Ratings

UPDATED WITH NIELSEN REVISED NUMBERS. PREVIOUS NUMBERS WERE AN UNDERCOUNT

The 2020 World Series was the lowest rated and lowest viewed Series on record. The six-game series averaged just a 5.2/12 rating/share among households, down from 8.1/16 for the Nationals/Astros series last year, and 9.785 million viewers, also down from last year (13.959 million). Additionally, Game 3 of the series was officially the lowest-rated (4.3/10) and lowest-viewed (8.339 million) World Series game of all time.

The final game did pull relatively okay numbers at 6.8/15 among households, a 3.51 adults 18-49 rating, and 12.819 million viewers. It was also the youngest-skewing game of the series with a median age of 54.5 which helped lower the series average to 55.9. This was the youngest-skewing series since 2017 (55.0).

In the local markets, Los Angeles averaged a 21.2/40 rating share over the six games, including 27.5/48 for game 6 which was actually higher than any of the 2018 World Series games, and the highest for any Dodgers game since game 7 of the 2017 World Series (36.7/56).

Tampa averaged a 15.2/29 over the six games including a 18.2/33 for game 6 which was the highest for a Rays game since the final game of the 2008 World Series (29.8/42) where the Rays lost to the Phillies.

TV Ratings: Sunday August 30, 2020

It was a busy Sunday night on the broadcast nets with a variety of different programming airing. ABC dedicated their entire programming bloc to honoring actor Chadwick Boseman after his tragic death last Friday. At 8pm an airing of his 2018 film 'Black Panther' scored the best broadcast numbers in quite a while with a 1.4 adults 18-49 rating, a 0.8 in 18-34, a 1.9 in 25-54, and 6.272 million viewers. In viewership it was beaten by only ABC World News Tonight (6.7 million) which was out of primetime. A lead-out special, 'A Tribute Fit for a King' also did very well with a 1.2 rating and 4.95 million viewers. Over at CBS, 'Big Brother' only found itself partially affected by the increased competition, down a tenth in the demo from last week (0.9 rating) and down slightly across the board in 18-34 (0.5), 25-54 (1.2), and total viewers (3.806 million) though still easily the day's third-highest rated program. Elsewhere, FOX was all in reruns, and NBC had decent numbers with game 4 of the Flyers/Islanders 'NHL Playoff' series (0.5 rating, 1.561 million).

TV Ratings: Saturday August 29, 2020

There wasn't much happening on the broadcast nets Saturday and NBC's evening coverage of 'NASCAR Cup Series Racing' easily beating out all primetime competition in adults 18-49 (0.6/5), adults 18-34 (0.3/4), adults 25-54 (1.0/6), and total viewers (3.869 million). Looking at the full day, ABC's 'World News Tonight' had the win among viewers (6 million) due to its usual sizable 50+ crowd (13 share). Over at CBS, the premiere of 'Love Island: More to Love' completely bombed, mustering just a 0.1 demo rating and not even close to a million viewers (698,000 to be exact) - the lowest-viewed program on all of broadcast. Finally, FOX was new with 'PBC Fight Night' which delivered a slightly-better 0.2 rating with 832,000 viewers (823,000 stuck around for the post game).

TV Ratings: Friday August 28, 2020

Friday was more of the same on the broadcast nets with FOX's 'WWE Friday Night Smackdown' taking the nightly victory among adults 18-49 (0.6/4), adults 18-34 (0.3/4), and adults 25-54 (0.7/4). It also led in total viewers (2.144 million) among the originals, but was beaten out by reruns of CBS's 'Blue Bloods' (2.9 million) & 'MacGyver' (2.85 million), and ABC's 'Shark Tank' (2.7 million). Sandwiched between the CBS reruns was a new episode of 'Love Island' which held the 18-49 (0.3/2) and 18-34 (0.2/2) figures from those two programs, but tumbled in terms of total viewers (1.472 million) as the large 50+ crowd present for 'MacGyver' (5 share) & 'Blue Bloods' (6 share) abandoned ship for 'Island' (2 share). Elsewhere, ABC aired a new '20/20' (0.2/2, 1.919 million) while the CW had 'Masters of Illusion' (0.1/1, 666,000) and two new episodes of 'Being Reuben' at 9pm (0.1/0, 298,000) & 9:30pm (0.0/0, 200,000).

TV Ratings: Thursday August 27, 2020

CBS and the CW had the only non-convention original programming on the broadcast nets. 'Big Brother' led across the demos: adults 18-49 (1.0/7), adults 18-34 (0.7/7), adults 25-54 (1.4/7), and in total viewers (3.99 million). Per usual, the best numbers came from women 25-54 (1.7/8) and women 18-49 (0.9/9). Lead-out 'Love Island' lost more than half in the demo (0.4/2) and total viewers (1.47 million), but still easily out-performed the CW's 'Mysteries Decoded' (0.1/1, 781,000).

In the 'RNC' ratings race, Fox News had a dominating victory among adults 25-54 (2.129 million) and, nearly equaling the combined totals of CNN (759,000), ABC (725,000), and NBC (720,000). Among total viewers, CNN (2.196 million), ABC (2.575 million), and NBC (2.271 million) combined for more than 7 million which Fox News easily singlehandedly out-rated (9.043 million). CBS and MSNBC were both pretty far behind in both 25-54 (461,000 & 388,000) and total viewers (1.784 million & 1.829 million).

Finally, the CW was new with a 'Women in Film' special (0.1/, 303,000 viewers) and 'Coroner' (0.1/0, 618,000) though neither were able to crack 100K 18-49 viewers (73K & 98K).

TV Ratings: Saturday August 22, 2020

Saturday was a sports-heavy day featuring games across the NHL, MLB, NBA, and MLS - and it still feels very odd to be reporting these numbers in August rather than in April & May, but this ongoing coronavirus pandemic has made 2020 a very unusual year (to say the least).

Leading the day was ABC's coverage of the 'NBA Playoffs' featuring the Lakers & Blazers which scored victories among adults 18-49 (1.3 rating), adults 18-34 (1.1), adults 25-54 (1.5), and total viewers (3.828 million). TV Ratings: Friday August 14, 2020

FOX's 'WWE Smackdown' (2.002 million viewers) again led the way in the Friday broadcast ratings taking the top spot in adults 18-49 (0.6/4), 18-34 (0.3/4), and 25-54 (0.7/4). It is also one of the very few broadcast programs with a majority-male audience, delivering a 0.7/5 in men 18-49 (vs. 0.4/3 in women), a 0.4/3 in M18-34 (vs. 0.2/2), and 0.8/5 in M25-54 (vs. 0.6/3). Over at CBS, 'Greatest #AtHome Videos' (0.4/3 in 18-49) was the highest-viewed program on either broadcast or cable (3.831 million) and ranked third on the broadcast nets in 18-49 audience (542,000) behind 'Smackdown' (713,000) and a rerun of NBC's 'Dateline' (573,000). Finally, the CW had atrocious results from 'Masters of Illusion' (0.1/1, 450,000) and two episodes of 'Being Reuben' at 9pm (0.0/0, 196,000) and 9:30pm (0.0/0, 161,000). None of the three were even able to muster over 100K adults 18-49 though 'Illusion' (97,000) came much closer than 'Reuben' (50,000 & 40,000). I can't even give the CW its usual credit for having the night's youngest-skewing show as that honor belongs to 'Smackdown' (median age: 54.3).

Without a strong lead-in, the show dropped to the mid-2 millions and below a 1.0 demo rating for the remainder of its first season. A second season premiered in Dec. 2010 and was on par with those numbers (0.6 rating, 2.4 million) for the first few episodes, but ultimately tumbled to well below 2 million viewers and to low demo ratings (0.3-0.4). USA's 'Psych' premiered July 6, 2006 to a 1.9 adults 18-49 rating with 6.06 million viewers, gaining nicely from its 'Monk' lead-in (1.4 rating, 5.09 mil). 'Psych' would continue to air behind 'Monk' for its first three and a half seasons (55 total episodes), losing an average of 882,000 viewers each week. The best demo and viewership figures for the show came in its first season where it delivered a 1.5 rating and 4.34 million viewers, and it managed to stay above a 1.0 in the demo all the way through its fifth season in 2010. Its sixth season ticked down to a 0.97 rating, and the show fell about two-tenths each of the next two seasons, with its eighth and final season bringing in just 0.64 with 1.68 million viewers. A total of 121 episodes aired over the course of eight seasons, and two additional movies have aired since the show concluded in 2014: one in 2017 on USA Network, and one on the Peacock streaming service in 2020. Note: the 18-49 season averages are calculated from the available data and in seasons with a lot of missing data (I am missing 18-49 data for nearly the entire summer 2008), the value in the table may not reflect the true season average.

TV Ratings: Wednesday July 22, 2020

ABC's 'United We Fall' special led the ratings on broadcast nets among adults 18-49 (0.5 rating) and ranked a close second in total viewers (3.71 million) just behind a rerun of NBC's 'Chicago PD' (3.78 million). Also on ABC was 'Marvel's Agents of SHIELD' (0.3, 1.28 million) which actually did worse in the demo & in total viewers than the reruns of three ABC comedies preceding it. At CBS, 'Tough as Nails' (0.4, 3.44 million) and 'Game On' (0.3, 2.21 million) both performed OK, as did FOX's 'Ultimate Tag' (0.3, 1.15 million). The CW hit another rounded zero with a dismal showing from 'Bulletproof' (290,000).

On the cable side, MTV's 'Challenge: Total Madness' led the day in key among adults 18-49 (0.45 rating), 18-34 (0.40), and females 12-34 (0.49), but ranked second in women 18-49 (0.61) behind Bravo's 'Real Housewives of Beverly Hills' (0.61).
