NBC's 'America's Got Talent' ranked second in the demo (0.8 rating), but led in total viewership (6.403 million) due to a huge chunk of 50+ (10 share). It led into the U.S. premiere of the Canadian medical drama 'Transplant' which got off to an OK start among adults 18-49 (0.4) and total viewers (3.958 million). Its official premiere back in February delivered 1.312 million Canadian viewers, on par with what 'This is Us' & 'MacGyver' were getting in the country. Over at CBS, 'Love Island' (0.4, 1.698 million) had moderate returns, but at the CW 'Dead Pixels' (0.1, 395,000) & 'Tell Me a Story' (0.1, 281,000) were both invisible.

TV Ratings: Sunday August 30, 2020

It was a busy Sunday night on the broadcast nets with a variety of different programming airing. ABC dedicated their entire programming bloc to honoring actor Chadwick Boseman after his tragic death last Friday. At 8pm an airing of his 2018 film 'Black Panther' scored the best broadcast numbers in quite a while with a 1.4 adults 18-49 rating, a 0.8 in 18-34, a 1.9 in 25-54, and 6.272 million viewers. In viewership it was beaten by only ABC World News Tonight (6.7 million) which was out of primetime. A lead-out special, 'A Tribute Fit for a King' also did very well with a 1.2 rating and 4.95 million viewers. Over at CBS, 'Big Brother' only found itself partially affected by the increased competition, down a tenth in the demo from last week (0.9 rating) and down slightly across the board in 18-34 (0.5), 25-54 (1.2), and total viewers (3.806 million) though still easily the day's third-highest rated program. Elsewhere, FOX was all in reruns, and NBC had decent numbers with game 4 of the Flyers/Islanders 'NHL Playoff' series (0.5 rating, 1.561 million).

TV Ratings: Saturday August 29, 2020

There wasn't much happening on the broadcast nets Saturday and NBC's evening coverage of 'NASCAR Cup Series Racing' easily beating out all primetime competition in adults 18-49 (0.6/5), adults 18-34 (0.3/4), adults 25-54 (1.0/6), and total viewers (3.869 million). Looking at the full day, ABC's 'World News Tonight' had the win among viewers (6 million) due to its usual sizable 50+ crowd (13 share). Over at CBS, the premiere of 'Love Island: More to Love' completely bombed, mustering just a 0.1 demo rating and not even close to a million viewers (698,000 to be exact) - the lowest-viewed program on all of broadcast. Finally, FOX was new with 'PBC Fight Night' which delivered a slightly-better 0.2 rating with 832,000 viewers (823,000 stuck around for the post game).

TV Ratings: Friday August 28, 2020

Friday was more of the same on the broadcast nets with FOX's 'WWE Friday Night Smackdown' taking the nightly victory among adults 18-49 (0.6/4), adults 18-34 (0.3/4), and adults 25-54 (0.7/4). Sandwiched between the CBS reruns was a new episode of 'Love Island' which held the 18-49 (0.3/2) and 18-34 (0.2/2) figures from those two programs, but tumbled in terms of total viewers (1.472 million) as the large 50+ crowd present for 'MacGyver' (5 share) & 'Blue Bloods' (6 share) abandoned ship for 'Island' (2 share). Elsewhere, ABC aired a new '20/20' (0.2/2, 1.919 million) while the CW had 'Masters of Illusion' (0.1/1, 666,000) and two new episodes of 'Being Reuben' at 9pm (0.1/0, 298,000) & 9:30pm (0.0/0, 200,000).

'Big Brother' led across the demos: adults 18-49 (1.0/7), adults 18-34 (0.7/7), adults 25-54 (1.4/7), and in total viewers (3.99 million). In the 'RNC' ratings race, Fox News had a dominating victory among adults 25-54 (2.129 million) and, nearly equaling the combined totals of CNN (759,000), ABC (725,000), and NBC (720,000). TV Ratings: Saturday August 22, 2020

Saturday was a sports-heavy day featuring games across the NHL, MLB, NBA, and MLS - and it still feels very odd to be reporting these numbers in August rather than in April & May, but this ongoing coronavirus pandemic has made 2020 a very unusual year (to say the least).

Leading the day was ABC's coverage of the 'NBA Playoffs' featuring the Lakers & Blazers which scored victories among adults 18-49 (1.3 rating), adults 18-34 (1.1), adults 25-54 (1.5), and total viewers (3.828 million). The top viewed broadcast program outside of prime-time was 'World News Tonight' (5.4 million) which also logged a sizable 12 share in people over 50. TV Ratings: Friday August 14, 2020

FOX's 'WWE Smackdown' (2.002 million viewers) again led the way in the Friday broadcast ratings taking the top spot in adults 18-49 (0.6/4), 18-34 (0.3/4), and 25-54 (0.7/4). It is also one of the very few broadcast programs with a majority-male audience, delivering a 0.7/5 in men 18-49 (vs. 0.4/3 in women), a 0.4/3 in M18-34 (vs. 0.2/2), and 0.8/5 in M25-54 (vs. 0.6/3). Over at CBS, 'Greatest #AtHome Videos' (0.4/3 in 18-49) was the highest-viewed program on either broadcast or cable (3.831 million) and ranked third on the broadcast nets in 18-49 audience (542,000) behind 'Smackdown' (713,000) and a rerun of NBC's 'Dateline' (573,000). Finally, the CW had atrocious results from 'Masters of Illusion' (0.1/1, 450,000) and two episodes of 'Being Reuben' at 9pm (0.0/0, 196,000) and 9:30pm (0.0/0, 161,000). None of the three were even able to muster over 100K adults 18-49 though 'Illusion' (97,000) came much closer than 'Reuben' (50,000 & 40,000). I can't even give the CW its usual credit for having the night's youngest-skewing show as that honor belongs to 'Smackdown' (median age: 54.3).

TV Ratings: Thursday August 13, 2020

CBS's 'Big Brother' took victory Thursday on the broadcast nets with a 1.0/7 adults 18-49 rating/share and wins in adults 18-34 (0.8/7), 25-54 (1.3/4), and total viewers (4.019 million). It also easily led in the subdemos, scoring best in women 18-49 (1.3/8) and women 25-54 (1.6/8). TNT's 'The Closer' premiered June 13, 2005 to 7.03 million viewers and 2.57 million adults 18-49 (2.0 rating) which was, at the time, the highest numbers for a cable premiere ever. It held the record for over 10 years until the Aug. 2015 premiere of AMC's 'Fear the Walking Dead' (10.13 million). Throughout its run, 'Closer' was a cable ratings juggernaut, regularly ranking as the most-viewed weekly program. The show saw growth in its first couple years, hitting a peak in 2007 when its third season averaged 1.7 in the 18-49 demo and over 7.5 million viewers. Even as it steadily declined the rest of its run, it maintained an average of over 1.0 in the demo and more than 6 million viewers. It finally concluded August 13, 2012 to a 1.6 rating with 9.08 million viewers - a series-high in viewership. Over the course of its seven seasons, 'Closer' aired a total of 109 episodes.

Saving Grace (TNT): Ratings Recap

TNT's 'Saving Grace' premiered July 23, 2007 to a 1.5/4 adults 18-49 rating/share and 6.42 million viewers, holding the full demo from its 'The Closer' lead-in. Those would end up being its best ratings as it wasn't able to keep up with the juggernaut cable ratings 'Closer' was bringing in. Despite hovering in the 4-5 million viewer range throughout the summer, the final four episodes of the first season aired in December to low audiences. The Dec. 3rd episode, for instance, had a 'Closer' lead-in (1.3 rating, 6.05 million), yet tumbled by 50% to 0.7 with 3.04 million viewers. Things started to look better at the start of the second season in 2008 with the premiere delivering 1.2 in the demo with 5.16 million viewers. The summer '08 portion the season was pretty promising as well, mostly staying in the 4-5 million range, but the second portion of the season which aired in the spring of 2009 fell hard to the low 2-millions and wasn't able to recover. A third and final season aired in the summer of '09 & spring of 2010 averaging just 0.6 in the demo with 2.57 million viewers. The show was cancelled after three seasons. Note: we do not have 18-49 data for every episode, but it was available for the majority of them.

NBC's afternoon coverage of the 'NASCAR Cup Series' delivered a 0.62 rating in adults 18-49, a 0.3 in adults 18-34, and 4.34 million viewers. This beat out everything in primetime except for a 7pm rerun of '60 Minutes' on CBS (6.09 million). The highest-viewed program on broadcast for the day came from ABC's 'World News Tonight' (7.94 million) which also saw decent numbers in 18-49 (0.6) and 18-34 (0.3). In adults over 50 it had the highest share among all evening programs (15 share) and in total day it was only eclipsed by CBS's 'Sunday Morning' at 9am (16 share).

As how it tends to be in the summer, things were much more interesting on the cable side. TLC's '90 Day Fiance: Happily Ever After?' led the day in most major demos including adults 18-49 (0.88 rating), women of that demo (1.16), adults 18-34 (0.61), females 12-34 (0.74), and adults 25-54 (1.09). It tied Adult Swim's 'Robot Chicken' (0.33, 615,000) for the lead in men 12-34 (0.29), and it was also the second-most-viewed program (3.03 million).

TV Ratings: Saturday July 4, 2020

The ever-so-deadly combination of a Saturday holiday equates to both a lack of original programming and low overall ratings. This weekend's Fourth of July was no exception with the only original telecast on the broadcast nets coming from NBC's coverage of the 'Macy's Fourth of July Fireworks' in New York. The program actually did fairly OK, easily taking the top spot among all programming (cable included) in adults 18-49 (0.69 rating), 18-34 (0.4), 25-54 (0.9) and total viewers (4.76 million). The re-airing at 10pm also did quite well at 0.55 in the demo and 3.23 million viewers.

On the cable side, ESPN's airing of the 'Hot Dog Eating Contest' won among adults 18-49 (0.32 rating), men of that demo (0.42), and 18-34 (0.24). Its 966,000 viewers placed it below cable news programming, but above almost everything else.

TV Ratings: Friday July 3, 2020

There wasn't much in terms of originals airing on the broadcast nets the Friday before the holiday and the ratings for the night weren't too pretty. Among the three originals airing, FOX's 'WWE Friday Night Smackdown' led the demo (0.40 rating) but was nearly 2 million viewers back on CBS's 'Dick Van Dyke Show' Carl Reiner tribute special (3.76 million vs. 1.78 million) which itself was OK in the demo (0.29). Finally, the CW had an 'iHeartCountry 4th of July BBQ' special which was low at 0.11 with 588,000 viewers.

On the cable side, Fox News had a stellar night with its 8pm-12am programming taking the top 4 spots on the day among adults 18-49, 25-54, and total viewers. 'Fox News at Night' at 11pm led in 18-49 (0.53 rating) & 25-54 (0.86) while 'Ingraham Angle' led among total viewers (5.69 million vs. 5.39 million) and was close behind in the demos (0.49 & 0.82). 'Hannity' (0.34/0.60, 4.41 million) & 'Tucker Carlson' (0.27/0.45, 3.48 million) finished things off.
