TV Ratings: Sunday July 5, 2020

With no originals airing in primetime on the broadcast nets, we have to expand our search into earlier parts of the day to find ratings successes. FOX's afternoon coverage of the 'NASCAR Cup Series' delivered a 0.6 rating in adults 18-49, a 0.3 in adults 18-34, and 4.34 million viewers. This beat out everything in primetime except for a 7pm rerun of '60 Minutes' on CBS (6.09 million). The highest-viewed program on broadcast for the day came from ABC's 'World News Tonight' (7.94 million) which also saw decent numbers in 18-49 (0.6) and 18-34 (0.3). In adults over 50 it had the highest share among all evening programs (15 share) and in total day it was only eclipsed by CBS's 'Sunday Morning' at 9am (16 share).

As how it tends to be in the summer, things were much more interesting on the cable side. TLC's '90 Day Fiance: Happily Ever After?' led the day in most major demos including adults 18-49 (0.88 rating), women of that demo (1.16), adults 18-34 (0.61), females 12-34 (0.74), and adults 25-54 (1.09). It tied Adult Swim's 'Robot Chicken' (0.33, 615,000) for the lead in men 12-34 (0.29), and it was also the second-most-viewed program (3.03 million).

TV Ratings: Saturday July 4, 2020

The ever-so-deadly combination of a Saturday holiday equates to both a lack of original programming and low overall ratings. This weekend's Fourth of July was no exception with the only original telecast on the broadcast nets coming from NBC's coverage of the 'Macy's Fourth of July Fireworks' in New York. The program actually did fairly OK, easily taking the top spot among all programming (cable included) in adults 18-49 (0.7 rating), 18-34 (0.4), 25-54 (0.9) and total viewers (4.76 million). The re-airing at 10pm also did quite well at 0.6 in the demo and 3.23 million viewers.

On the cable side, ESPN's airing of the 'Hot Dog Eating Contest' won among adults 18-49 (0.32 rating), men of that demo (0.42), and 18-34 (0.24). Its 966,000 viewers placed it below cable news programming, but above almost everything else.

A second season premiered in 2010, and while it still brought in decent numbers, it lost some steam from its first season: it was logging between a 0.5 and 0.6 in the demo and between 1.5 and 2 million viewers for most episodes. A short third season premiered in 2012, but tumbled to series-lows in both the demo (0.4) and total viewers (907,000) mid-way through and was not renewed for a fourth season. Note: all available T12-17 ratings are included in a table below the normal ratings table.

Weekly Nielsen Ratings: Spring 1982

Below are the full weekly ratings results for the spring 1981-82 television season. Viewership wasn't reported by Nielsen until the fall 1989 season, so up until that point the only metric widely available was the household rating (which is what is reported here in this article). To calculate the estimated number of households watching, just multiply each rating by 815,000 as that is what 1 rating point represents. The following are newspaper clippings from the Los Angeles Times, which was the only newspaper in the United States to publish full weekly TV ratings results. Images can be clicked to enlarge.

Last was CW's 'The 100' at 0.21 in the demo and 708,000 viewers.

As has been the pattern of late, cable news programming took up 20 of the top 25 spots on cable for the day with CNN taking up 12 of those spots (all in the top 20). CNN's primetime programming was ranked one, two, and three on the day in both 18-49 and 25-54 with 10pm's 'CNN Tonight' (0.60 in 18-49/0.84 in 25-54, 2.8 million viewers) on top, then 8pm's 'Anderson Cooper 360' (0.60/0.89, 3.25 million) and 9pm's 'Cuomo Primetime' (0.57/0.85, 3.17 million).

Weekly Nielsen Ratings: Fall 1981

Below are the full weekly ratings results for the fall 1981-82 television season. Viewership wasn't reported by Nielsen until the fall 1989 season, so up until that point the only metric widely available was the household rating (which is what is reported here in this article). To calculate the estimated number of households watching, just multiply each rating by 799,000 (through w/e October 4) or 815,000 (w/e October 11 onward) as that is what 1 rating point represents. The following are newspaper clippings from the Los Angeles Times, which was the only newspaper in the United States to publish full weekly TV ratings results. Full ratings for the week ending Dec. 27 were not available in the LA Times, so full rankings were provided from the Fort Worth Star Telegram and ratings for the top 10 programs were provided from the Pittsburgh Press. On a very low-rated Tuesday, NBC's 'America's Got Talent' (1.45 rating in 18-49, 9.9 million viewers) and 'World of Dance' (0.97 rating, 5 million) were the sole bright spots and the only two programs on either broadcast or cable to average a rounded 1.0 rating. ABC's 'Our New Reality' (0.40, 2.57 million) and 'Genetic Detective' (0.37, 3.26 million) were modest, but generally unimpressive while CW's 'Stargirl' (0.27, 1.19 million) and 'Legends of Tomorrow' (0.19, 760,000) were downright disappointing.

Various Programs (Netflix and Amazon): Ratings Recaps

Below are ratings charts for a variety of different programs on both Netflix and Amazon with data from Nielsen Media Research. The data provided differs by show, so the tables will look different from program to program, though every program has a column for total viewership. Top performances include the season 3 premiere of 'Stranger Things' which notched an impressive 19.2 million U.S. viewers within 3 days of its release - up from 15.8 million which saw the season 2 premiere within three days. 'Tiger King' delivered nearly 19 million U.S. viewers within its first 10 days while 'Bird Box' notched nearly 35 million in that same frame. The third season of 'Ozark' was a bit lower, at just 8.7 million viewers in its first 10 days, but the sixth season of 'House of Cards' was even worse, logging a disappointing 2.9 million viewers for its season premiere within the first week of its release.

Treme (HBO): Ratings Recap

HBO's 'Treme' premiered April 11, 2010 to a strong 0.4/1 adults 18-49 rating/share and 1.13 million viewers and hit its series-high of a 0.6/2 and 1.17 million viewers near the end of the first season. The show dropped from a 777,000 season 1 average to 574,000 in season 2 (2011), but showed remarkable season-to-season retention in season 3 (2012) where it averaged 533,000. A shortened fourth and final season aired in December 2013, falling further to 454,000 viewers, but stayed relatively even in the demo from season 3 (0.17 to 0.18). A total of 36 episodes aired over the course of its 4 seasons.

Copper (BBC America): Ratings Recap

'Copper' premiered August 19, 2012 on BBC America to a 0.36 A18-49 rating and 1.11 million viewers - strong numbers for that network. It hovered just below 1 million viewers and above a 0.2 rating for the next few episodes before dropping to 0.15 with 523,000 viewers for its first season finale. It was renewed for a second season which premiered in 2013 to a 0.13 rating with 510,000 viewers and continued falling - hitting a series-low 0.06 in the demo and 350,000 viewers near the end of the season. The second season averaged just a 0.09 rating and 414,000 viewers (down from 0.21/692K for season 1) which was not enough to warrant a third season. The show aired a total of 23 episodes over the course of its 2 seasons.

Atlantis (BBC America): Ratings Recap

BBC America's 'Atlantis' premiered November 23, 2013 to a decent 0.26 A18-49 rating and 631,000 viewers. Unfortunately, it dropped heavily in week 2 and never recovered, averaging a 0.09 rating and 311,000 viewers in its first season. Removing the first episode, that average drops down to 0.08 in the demo and 285,000 viewers. Nevertheless, it was renewed for a second season which premiered November 15, 2014 to a 0.09 rating with 390,000 viewers - on par with the first season. For unknown reasons, BBC America decided to split the season in half, airing the first 6 episodes in fall 2014 and the last 7 in summer 2015. Those first 6 episodes actually didn't perform too terribly, at 0.07 in the demo and 270,000 viewers, but the summer 2015 episodes fell to micro-level, averaging just a 0.03 rating and 139,000 viewers. Needless to say, the program was not renewed for a third season.

It hit a first season high of 1.5 in the demo (more than twice its premiere audience!) and 2.7 million viewers and saw huge growth in its second season where it averaged a 2.3 rating and 4.28 million viewers (a more than 100% jump in from season 1). It continued growing in season 3 where it peaked at 2.85 in the demo and 4.97 million viewers. The show remained above a 2.0 rating and 4 million viewers throughout its fourth, fifth, and sixth seasons, before finally dropping in its seventh season to 1.84 in the demo and 3.5 million viewers. It concluded on August 24, 2014 to a 2.1 rating with 4.04 million viewers.

Dark Blue (TNT): Ratings Recap

TNT's 'Dark Blue' premiered July 15, 2009 to a 0.9/3 adults 18-49 rating/share and 3.54 million viewers - retaining most of its lead-in - the second season premiere of 'Leverage' (1.0/3, 3.89M). The first season finale aired without a 'Leverage' lead-in, and tumbled hard to 1.61 million viewers, though with a first season average of 0.7 in the demo and nearly 2.6 million viewers, it was apparently enough to warrant a second season. The second season premiered in 2010 with a double episode which was on par with its first season average, but by the end of the season, the show began to regularly dip below 2 million viewers and finished its run with 1.82 million. It was not renewed for a third season, and a total of 20 episodes aired over the course of its 2 seasons.

The White Queen, The White Princess, & The Spanish Princess (Starz): Ratings Recaps

Below are the ratings for three programs on Starz that aired in 2013, 2017, and 2019. 'The Spanish Princess' (2019) is a sequel to 'The White Princess' (2017) which itself is a sequel to 'The White Queen' (2013) hence why they appear in the same ratings recap. ABC's 'Shark Tank' led the Friday night 8pm hour with a 0.8 rating/5 share among adults 18-49 (about 993,000 in that demo) and 4.8 million viewers. CBS took second with 'MacGyver' (0.6/4 with 5.9 million), followed by NBC with 'The Blacklist' (0.5/3, 4.5 million), and FOX with 'WWE Smackdown' (0.5/3, 1.9 million). Though 'Blacklist' and 'Smackdown' technically tie in the rounded ratings, the former edged out the latter in 18-49 viewers (671K to 639K). CW's 'Charmed' (0.2/1, 581,000) took the bottom spot, though it did have the night's youngest audience at 53.7 years.

In the 9pm hour, CBS's 'Magnum PI' (0.7/4, 7.2 million) took the top spot, just edging out NBC's 2-hour 'Dateline' (0.7/4, 4.6 million) in 18-49 viewership (930K to 874K). 'PI' also averaged a much older audience, pulling an 11 share in adults 50+ compared to 'Dateline's' 7 share, with an average audience age of 67 (to 61.7).  Also airing was 'Dynasty' which was a speck with just 98,000 18-49 viewers (0.1/0) and 323,000 overall. It notched 14 share in people over 50 and had an average audience age of almost 70 (69.7). Despite this, it still pulled in a respectable rating in adults 18-34 (0.4) tying its 'PI' lead-in.

On the cable side, 'Live PD' on A&E notched the day's best ratings in adults 18-49 (0.48), women 18-49 (0.52), men 18-49 (0.43), and adults 25-54 (0.66). Other programs of note include HBO's 'Real Time' (1.2 million) & 'Betty' (158,000).

Thursday April 30, 2020 TV Ratings Peek

At 8pm, CBS's 'Young Sheldon' took victory, averaging a 1.1 rating/6 share in adults 18-49 and 10.1 million viewers. The program skewed very old with a 15 share in people over 50 and just a 0.5 rating in people 18-34. 'The Paley Center Salutes,' on NBC, was down just a tenth in the demo (1.0/5, 3.25 million), and ABC's 'Millionaire' (0.8/5, 6.2 million) took third. Finally, 'Katy Keene', on the CW, was invisible at just 0.1/1 (119,000 people in the demo) with 401,000 viewers.

'Man with a Plan' notched a modest 0.7/4 at 8:30 with 6.6 million viewers.

At 9pm, NBC's 'Parks and Recreation' took an easy victory, averaging a 1.4 rating/7 share in the adults 18-49 demographic and 3.6 million total viewers (1.7 million in the demo). The special was the youngest-skewing program on broadcast, scoring the day's best 18-34 rating (1.2) with an average viewing age of just 47.9 (for comparison, the next youngest was a FOX rerun at 55.8). In people over 50, the show had only a 3 share.

Elsewhere at 9pm, ABC's 'Station 19' (0.9/5, 5.6 million) was second on the hour and performed well in women demos, 18-49 (1.2/6) and 25-54 (1.7/6). A second episode of 'Man With a Plan' (0.7/4, 6.1 million) retained most of its lead-in (960,000 v. 897,000 in the demo); both episodes scored 9 shares in people 50+. In a distant last-place was CW's 'In the Dark' which mustered only a 0.1/0 rating (102,000) and 394,000 viewers. The show scored a 0 share in all major sub-demographics except for women 25-54 where it found a 1 share.

A new episode of 'Broke' at 9:30 was marginal at 0.6/3 in the demo with just under 5.1 million viewers.

Finally at 10pm, 'How to Get Away with Murder' (0.6/4, 2.8 million) took victory, up a tenth from second-place 'Tommy' (0.5/3, 5.1 million), and up three-tenths from third-place NBC drama 'Council of Dads' (0.3/2, 2 million). 'Murder' also found its usual success in key women demos, pulling a 0.9/5 in W18-49 and 1.2/5 in W25-54. 'Tommy' skewed extremely old: it had a 9 share in people over 50 and an average audience age of 67.9 - the highest for the night. As for 'Council,' it's low 18-49 rating cannot be fully attributed to an older audience, as the show managed only a 2 share in people over 50 and its median age of 60.9 is well below the CBS averages.

Cable highlights for the night include MTV's 'Jersey Shore' which ranked #1 in F12-34 (0.4 rating) and #2 in W18-49 (0.57), just one-hundredth behind Bravo's 'Real Housewives of NYC' (0.58). In total viewers, those two programs were at 895,000 and 1.2 million respectively. 'Families of the Mafia,' which followed 'Shore' had poor retention at 0.15/0.19 in those demos and only 355,000 viewers.

E!'s 'Keeping Up with the Kardashians' was ranked #2 in F12-34 (0.37 rating) and #3 in W18-49 (0.47), with 810,000 viewers. 'Total Bellas' was at 0.3/0.33 in those demos with 600,000 viewers, and 'Kards Konfidential' had just 307,000.

Two episodes of 'Shaq Life' on TNT were virtually even between men and women 18-49 (both at 0.2 for the 9pm episode and 0.18/0.17 at 9:30), but lost 100K viewers, from 601,000 at 9pm to 508,000 at 9:30.

Broadcast & Cable Nielsens: Week Ending September 16, 2001

Prior to 1974, there would be random weeks in the year in which Nielsen would not measure the TV ratings, these were called "black weeks" (read more here). The very last of these "black weeks" was the week of April 23, 1973 - April 29, 1973. Every week since April 30, 1973, except for one, Nielsen has released a weekly ratings report. That one week was the week of September 10, 2001 - September 16, 2001. Due to the events of Tuesday September 11, 2001, news coverage dominated the television sphere and pre-empted almost everything on air. Out of respect, Nielsen did not release the weekly broadcast ratings for this week. They did; however, release the top 15 cable ratings and the daily overnight ratings. Both have been posted below.
