The Closer (TNT): Ratings Recap

TNT's 'The Closer' premiered June 13, 2005 to 7.03 million viewers and 2.57 million adults 18-49 (2.0 rating) which was, at the time, the highest numbers for a cable premiere ever. It held the record for over 10 years until the Aug. 2015 premiere of AMC's 'Fear the Walking Dead' (10.13 million). Throughout its run, 'Closer' was a cable ratings juggernaut, regularly ranking as the most-viewed weekly program. The show saw growth in its first couple years, hitting a peak in 2007 when its third season averaged 1.7 in the 18-49 demo and over 7.5 million viewers. Even as it steadily declined the rest of its run, it maintained an average of over 1.0 in the demo and more than 6 million viewers. It finally concluded August 13, 2012 to a 1.6 rating with 9.08 million viewers - a series-high in viewership. Over the course of its seven seasons, 'Closer' aired a total of 109 episodes.

NBC's 'America's Got Talent' again led the Tuesday broadcast ratings with a 1.1 adults 18-49 rating with 7.63 million viewers though this was a season low in both metrics for the program. Lead-out 'World of Dance' ranked second on the day in 18-49 (0.7) and logged 3.76 million total viewers. Elsewhere, ABC had 'What Would You Do?' (0.4, 2.68 million) and the CW had 'Stargirl' (0.2, 827,000) and 'Happy Hour' (0.1, 306,000).

Saving Grace (TNT): Ratings Recap

TNT's 'Saving Grace' premiered July 23, 2007 to a 1.5/4 adults 18-49 rating/share and 6.42 million viewers, holding the full demo from its 'The Closer' lead-in. Those would end up being its best ratings as it wasn't able to keep up with the juggernaut cable ratings 'Closer' was bringing in. Despite hovering in the 4-5 million viewer range throughout the summer, the final four episodes of the first season aired in December to low audiences. The Dec. 3rd episode, for instance, had a 'Closer' lead-in (1.3 rating, 6.05 million), yet tumbled by 50% to 0.7 with 3.04 million viewers. Things started to look better at the start of the second season in 2008 with the premiere delivering 1.2 in the demo with 5.16 million viewers. The summer '08 portion the season was pretty promising as well, mostly staying in the 4-5 million range, but the second portion of the season which aired in the spring of 2009 fell hard to the low 2-millions and wasn't able to recover. A third and final season aired in the summer of '09 & spring of 2010 averaging just 0.6 in the demo with 2.57 million viewers. The show was cancelled after three seasons.

TV Ratings: Sunday July 5, 2020

With no originals airing in primetime on the broadcast nets, we have to expand our search into earlier parts of the day to find ratings successes. NBC's afternoon coverage of the 'NASCAR Cup Series' delivered a 0.62 rating in adults 18-49, a 0.3 in adults 18-34, and 4.34 million viewers. This beat out everything in primetime except for a 7pm rerun of '60 Minutes' on CBS (6.09 million). The highest-viewed program on broadcast for the day came from ABC's 'World News Tonight' (7.94 million) which also saw decent numbers in 18-49 (0.6) and 18-34 (0.3). In adults over 50 it had the highest share among all evening programs (15 share) and in total day it was only eclipsed by CBS's 'Sunday Morning' at 9am (16 share).

As how it tends to be in the summer, things were much more interesting on the cable side. TLC's '90 Day Fiance: Happily Ever After?' led the day in most major demos including adults 18-49 (0.88 rating), women of that demo (1.16), adults 18-34 (0.61), females 12-34 (0.74), and adults 25-54 (1.09). It tied Adult Swim's 'Robot Chicken' (0.33, 615,000) for the lead in men 12-34 (0.29), and it was also the second-most-viewed program (3.03 million).

TV Ratings: Saturday July 4, 2020

The ever-so-deadly combination of a Saturday holiday equates to both a lack of original programming and low overall ratings. This weekend's Fourth of July was no exception with the only original telecast on the broadcast nets coming from NBC's coverage of the 'Macy's Fourth of July Fireworks' in New York. The program actually did fairly OK, easily taking the top spot among all programming (cable included) in adults 18-49 (0.69 rating), 18-34 (0.4), 25-54 (0.9) and total viewers (4.76 million). The re-airing at 10pm also did quite well at 0.55 in the demo and 3.23 million viewers.

On the cable side, ESPN's airing of the 'Hot Dog Eating Contest' won among adults 18-49 (0.32 rating), men of that demo (0.42), and 18-34 (0.24). Its 966,000 viewers placed it below cable news programming, but above almost everything else. The simulcast on ESPN2 logged a 0.05 rating with 173,000 viewers.
