Song Ratings: Week Ending January 7, 2021

New: beginning this week, music ratings will be divided into two weekly posts: one for albums, and one for individual songs as I think this is a much better way of organizing all of this data. Songs achieve their positions on the weekly Billboard & Rolling Stone lists based on three major metrics: sales, streaming, and airplay. Below are three charts: the top 25 songs of the week based on total U.S. sales, the top 25 based on total U.S. streaming and the top 20 songs of the week based on U.S. pop radio airplay.

The drop of Justin Bieber's 'Anyone' on New Year's Day propelled it to the top of the weekly sales chart with approximately 22,000 sales in its first week of release. Just outside of the top 25 below was Cardi B's 'WAP' (2,200), Ariana Grande's '34+35' (2,100), Internet Money's 'Lemonade' (1,600), and Bad Bunny's 'DAKITI' (1,500). Note: this list only includes songs that had over $33.1K revenue for the week; a song with less than $33.1K in revenue could theoretically have more sales than the 25th ranked song on this list and it would not appear here.

SZA's 'Good Days' led the first week of 2021 in streaming with 14.15 U.S. streams across all platforms, edging out 24KGolden's 'Mood' (13.46 million) by over a half-million streams. Ariana Grande took two spots in the top 25 with '34+35' (10.32 million) just ahead of album-mate 'Positions' (10.19 million). Taylor Swift nabbed the 15th spot on the week with a solid performance from 'evermore' lead single 'willow' which logged just over 9 million streams. Below the top 25, Justin Bieber had collab 'Monster' (6.99 million) & 'Holy' (6.44 million), BTS had 'Dynamite' (6.28 million), and Tate McRae was solid with 'You Broke Me First' (6.191 million). Note: this list only includes songs that had over $33.1K revenue for the week; a song with less than $33.1K in revenue could theoretically have more streams than the 25th ranked song on this list and it would not appear here.

Ariana Grande had another really solid week in the radio ratings with single 'positions' ranking as the most-played song of the week for the fourth week in a row. It saw an increase of over 600 plays week-to-week, to more than 17.6 thousand this week - a strong lead over second-ranked 24kGolden's 'Mood' (16.5K). Her other single on the chart, '34+35' had the second-most increased plays, up more than 1,600 from last week to just over 8,700. The song with the most increased plays was Justin Bieber's 'Anyone' which rose from just 845 last week (audience: 3.6 million) to 3,469 plays this week (audience: 11.27 million). This still wasn't enough to rank in the top 20, but at spot 25, it'll probably be on the list sooner or later. Also seeing strong increases in plays was Ed Sheeran's 'Afterglow' (up 1,136) which made it into the top 20 for the first time, and Taylor Swift's 'willow' which just barely missed out on making the list, ranking 21 on the week (4,513 plays/13.48 million audience).
