Music Ratings: Olivia Rodrigo dominates the week in streaming

Full music ratings, including the radio chart, sales chart, and streaming chart will be posted mid next week, per usual; however, I think a separate post is required to fully digest what has happened in the music industry this week. Last Friday saw the drop of Olivia Rodrigo's debut single 'drivers license,' and as we covered before, the song has been a huge hit both in the United States and globally. We're gonna dig a little more into the numbers now that a full week of availability is in the books.

Sales:
It's reported that the song has eclipsed 500,000 units in the United States, including around 38,000 in pure sales, and it will easily win the week in both of these metrics. In reaching 500K, this makes it the 10th fastest song by a female artist to reach Gold certification in the U.S., doing do in only 6.5 days (Adele's 'Hello' did it in just 1 day). The album is also expected to sell 1.2 million units worldwide in its opening week, making it one of only 8 by a female artist in the streaming era to sell over 1 million in the first week (company that includes the likes of Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Blackpink, Adele, and Cardi B). Additionally, it will be the very first debut song to reach these marks.

Streaming:
'Drivers License' has been streamed approximately 67 million times in the U.S. this week across all streaming platforms according to Alpha Data. This makes it the most-streamed song by a female artist ever in a single week, and the second most-streamed song in a week after Drake's 'Gods' Plan' (69 million). Below are the top 5 most-streamed songs from this week and last week in the U.S. and one can see exactly how big of a number 67 million is in comparison to the rest of the chart.

Spotify:
Finally, let's dig deeper into the streaming data by examine the song's performance on Spotify - the only streaming platform that actually releases comprehensive daily & weekly data. The data below just represents a fraction of the song's total weekly streaming numbers from above.

First, it's important to clarify between the two competing sets of data streams that are coming out of Spotify this week. There is fairly large disparity between the data posted on the Spotify Charts website versus the raw data Spotify had put out themselves. The raw data represents the actual number of streams that appear on the Spotify website while the Spotify Charts website apparently has a built-in mechanism which filters out (what they determine to be) "artificial inflation." Spotify stresses that data posted on the Spotify Charts website is "the best place" to view data. Note that this isn't an issue when looking at the U.S. data because there is no raw U.S. data released. Below is a chart tracking the Spotify streams of the song for the last 7 days.

Out of the 67 million total U.S. streams from the week, approximately 30.43 million came from Spotify. It became the only song in Spotify history to have multiple days with over 5 million streams as it currently sits at four days in a row at +5 million (including another 5.27 million yesterday). Below are the Spotify top 10 global and U.S. charts for the week ending Jan. 14 with 'drivers license' on top by a crazy margin - its 65.9 million global streams more than double the second-ranked 'DAKITI' on the global chart (30.7 million), and its 30.43 million U.S. streams more than triple second-ranked 'Good News' (8.5 million). We've never seen a song pull numbers quite like 'drivers license' has this week, and it has been quite a joy to experience.
