Album Ratings: Week Ending January 14, 2021

Albums achieve their positions on the weekly Billboard & Rolling Stone lists based on total units sold; a metric which is the sum of of pure album sales (sales of the entire actual album), streaming-equivalent album units (SEA), and track-equivalent album units (TEA). One SEA unit is equal to 1,250 premium (paid) streams, or 3,750 free streams, and one TEA unit is equal to 10 purchased tracks. There are two charts below: the first one has the top 10 albums based on total weekly units sold according to both Billboard and Rolling Stone. The two sites have different sources of data, hence why their numbers are different (but close). The second chart includes the top 20 albums of the week, according to Alpha Data, with breakdowns of pure albums, SEA units, and TEA units.

Morgan Wallen's new album 'Dangerous: The Double Album' easily topped the Album Sales chart this week, scoring 265,000 album equivalent units according to Billboard. This was the best performer by a number one album since Taylor Swift's 'evermore' logged 329,000 units in the week ending December 17, 2020. Of that 265,000 total, approximately 74,000 were from pure album sales, while TEA units accounted for around 7,000 and SEA units were 184,000. Billboard estimated the total streams at around 240 million, while Rolling Stone had that number much lower, at 223 million. The aforementioned 'evermore' dropped to the second spot this week with around 55,000 units, on par with last week's 56K while Pop Smoke's 'Shoot for the Stars, Aim for the Moon' held the third spot, up 3K units from last week (to 47,000). Also on the chart, Jasmine Sullivan debuted 'Heaux Tales' in the fourth spot with 43,000 units, narrowly beating Lil Durk's 'The Voice' (42,000) which fell to fifth this week from its 2 peak.
