Album Ratings: Week Ending January 7, 2021

New: beginning this week, music ratings will be divided into two weekly posts: one for albums, and one for individual songs as I think this is a much better way of organizing all of this data. Albums achieve their positions on the weekly Billboard & Rolling Stone lists based on total units sold; a metric which is the sum of of pure album sales (sales of the entire actual album), streaming-equivalent album units (SEA), and track-equivalent album units (TEA). One SEA unit is equal to 1,250 premium (paid) streams, or 3,750 free streams, and one TEA unit is equal to 10 purchased tracks. There are two charts below: the first one has the top 10 albums based on total weekly units sold according to both Billboard and Rolling Stone. The two sites have different sources of data, hence why their numbers are different (but close). The second chart includes the top 20 albums of the week, according to Alpha Data, with breakdowns of pure albums, SEA units, and TEA units.

On the album sales chart, Playboi Carti's 'Whole Lotta Red' fell four spots on the Billboard chart from its number one debut last week, adding just 33,000 units in the week ending January 7, 2021. With that, last week's Billboard 2-5 each rose one spot with Taylor Swift's 'evermore' returning to number one with 56,000 units. Lil Durk's 'The Voice' ascended to number two with 48,000 units though that represents a sizable decrease from last week's 66K. Finally, Luke Combs's 'What You See is What You Get' continues to get treated much better by Billboard than by Rolling Stone, ranking eighth on the former's chart (32,000) and 18th on the latter's (21,700).
