Albums achieve their positions on the weekly Billboard & Rolling Stone lists based on total units sold; a metric which is the sum of of pure album sales (sales of the entire actual album), streaming-equivalent album units (SEA), and track-equivalent album units (TEA). One SEA unit is equal to 1,250 premium (paid) streams, or 3,750 free streams, and one TEA unit is equal to 10 purchased tracks. There are two charts below: the first one has the top 10 albums based on total weekly units sold according to both Billboard and Rolling Stone. The two sites have different sources of data, hence why their numbers are different (but close). The second chart includes the top 20 albums of the week, according to Alpha Data, with breakdowns of pure albums, SEA units, and TEA units.
Morgan Wallen's 'Dangerous: The Double Album' again led the week on the album chart with over 159,000 units sold in the week ending January 21. This was down more than 100K from last week's huge 265K, but was still a sizable lead over second-ranked 'Shoot for the Stars, Aim for the Moon' from Pop Smoke which logged 47,000. Why Don't Lie placed their new album 'The Good Times and the Bad Ones' at the third spot on the Billboard chart with 46,000 units, but there was a major discrepancy between the Billboard numbers at the Rolling Stone ones as the latter reported 15,700 units for that album. The other major discrepancy in the numbers was with Eminem's 'Music to be Murdered by' which placed 7th on the Billboard list (33,000), but 15th on the Rolling Stone one (25,500). Taylor Swift's 'Evermore' dipped to the fourth spot on the week with 41,000 units (down from 55K) while Ariana Grande's 'Positions' rose to the fifth spot with 39,000 (up from 34K).
