Albums achieve their positions on the weekly Billboard & Rolling Stone lists based on total units sold; a metric which is the sum of of pure album sales (sales of the entire actual album), streaming-equivalent album units (SEA), and track-equivalent album units (TEA). One SEA unit is equal to 1,250 premium (paid) streams, or 3,750 free streams, and one TEA unit is equal to 10 purchased tracks. There are three charts below: the first one has the top 10 albums based on total weekly units sold according to both Billboard and Rolling Stone. The two sites have different sources of data, hence why their numbers are different (but close). A second chart includes the top 10 albums of the week according to Billboard based on pure album sales, and the third chart includes the top 25 albums of the week, according to Alpha Data, with breakdowns of pure albums, SEA units, and TEA units.
Drake easily scored the biggest first-week album debut of the year with new album 'Certified Lover Boy' totaling 613,000 album-equivalent units in the tracking week ending September 9th. Of this total, streaming accounted for 562,000 units and album sales accounted for 46,000. This was nearly than double the year's previous leader - Kanye West's 'Donda' (309,000) and the highest weekly total for an album since Taylor Swift's 'Folklore' logged 846,000 units in the tracking week ending July 30, 2020. The aforementioned 'Donda' delivered 141,000 units in its second week while Iron Maiden's new album 'Senjutsu' debuted in the third spot with 64,000 (and led the week in album sales with 61,000). Elsewhere on the chart, both Olivia Rodrigo's 'Sour' (61,000) and Doja Cat's 'Planet Her' (49,000) each dipped one spot in the rankings, to fourth and fifth respectively, while both Morgan Wallen's 'Dangerous: The Double Album' (40,000) and Billie Eilish's 'Happier Than Ever' (39,000) held the sixth and seventh positions. 'F*CK LOVE' from The Kid Laroi dropped 5-8 with 39,000, Rod Wave's 'Soulfly' went 8-10 with 30,000, and Imagine Dragons launched 'Mercury - Act 1' with an OK 31,000 units. Below the top 10, Halsey's 'If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power' fell 2-11 in its second week with 29,000 units, and Lady Gaga's Dawn of Chromatica' debuted in 66th with 11,000 units.
