Albums achieve their positions on the weekly Billboard & Rolling Stone lists based on total units sold; a metric which is the sum of of pure album sales (sales of the entire actual album), streaming-equivalent album units (SEA), and track-equivalent album units (TEA). One SEA unit is equal to 1,250 premium (paid) streams, or 3,750 free streams, and one TEA unit is equal to 10 purchased tracks. There are three charts below: the first one has the top 10 albums based on total weekly units sold according to both Billboard and Rolling Stone. The two sites have different sources of data, hence why their numbers are different (but close). A second chart includes the top 10 albums of the week according to Billboard based on pure album sales, and the third chart includes the top 25 albums of the week, according to Alpha Data, with breakdowns of pure albums, SEA units, and TEA units.
Drake's 'Certified Lover Boy' spends a second week atop the weekly album chart, logging 236,000 album-equivalent units in the tracking week ended September 16th. This was down from the prior week's huge 613,000 debut, but still the biggest second week for an album in 2021 and bigger than all but six other first-week album debuts this year. Of that total nearly all came from streaming (227,000 units) with only 6,500 coming from pure album sales. Kanye West's 'Donda' retained the second position with 79,000 units and Olivia Rodrigo's 'Sour' held the fourth spot with 54,000. Kacey Musgraves scored the biggest debut this week as 'Star-Crossed' launched at #3 with 77,000 total units, made up of 47,000 pure albums (where it led the week) and a modest 30,000 in streaming. The only other debut in the top 10 was Baby Keem's 'The Melodic Blue' which began at fifth with 53,000. The rest of the top 10 went like this: Doja Cat's 'Planet Her' dipped 5-6 (50,000), The Kid Laroi's 'F*CK LOVE' rose 8-7 (39,000), Morgan Wallen's 'Dangerous: The Double Album' sunk 6-8 (39,000), and Billie Eilish's 'Happier Than Ever' dropped 7-10 (34,000). Finally, Metallica's re-issue of their Black album landed at #9.
