Albums achieve their positions on the weekly Billboard & Rolling Stone lists based on total units sold; a metric which is the sum of of pure album sales (sales of the entire actual album), streaming-equivalent album units (SEA), and track-equivalent album units (TEA). One SEA unit is equal to 1,250 premium (paid) streams, or 3,750 free streams, and one TEA unit is equal to 10 purchased tracks. There are three charts below: the first one has the top 10 albums based on total weekly units sold according to both Billboard and Rolling Stone. The two sites have different sources of data, hence why their numbers are different (but close). A second chart includes the top 10 albums of the week according to Billboard based on pure album sales, and the third chart includes the top 25 albums of the week, according to Alpha Data, with breakdowns of pure albums, SEA units, and TEA units.
Kanye West's new album 'Donda' launched with a huge 309,000 album-equivalent units in the tracking week ending September 2nd. Despite only being available for 5 days, this was still the year's biggest sales week, besting Olivia Rodrigo's 'Sour' which logged 295,000 units in the week ending May 27th. Of the 309,000 total, streaming accounted for 272,000 while pure albums accounted for 37,000. In the second spot was Halsey's 'If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power' which debuted with 98,000 units - 70,500 from pure albums and 26,500 from streaming. With that, Olivia Rodrigo's 'Sour' dipped 1-3 with 74,000 units, Doja Cat's 'Planet Her' held the fourth spot (53,000), and The Kid Laroi's 'F*CK LOVE' rose 7-5 with 44,000. Elsewhere, Billie Eilish's 'Happier Than Ever' went 6-7 in the rankings and collected 40,000 units in its fifth week of availability, but Lorde's 'Solar Power' tumbled to 40th in its second week with just 14,000 units. Finally, Lil Tecca's new album 'We Love You Tecca 2' began with 30,000 units.
