NBA Playoffs Round 2 Out-of-Home Estimation

I recently made a post examining the ratings for the first round of the NBA Playoffs from 2019 and 2022 and estimating the impact of out-of home (OOH). Now, I'm going to use the same methodology to look at the ratings for the recently-concluded second round of the playoffs.

In the previous post, I used household (HH) ratings and viewers-per-home (VPN) estimations to extract the portion of the OOH audience that is now lumped in with the in-home audience. The main purpose of this, for me, is to better compare the ratings this year with previous years when OOH wasn't yet included.

Top Streaming (SVOD) Ratings: Week Ending April 10, 2022

Below are the weekly streaming/video-on-demand (SVOD) ratings for the week ending April 10, 2022. Netflix's 'Bridgerton' topped the weekly streaming (SVOD) ratings for a third consecutive time, collecting over 1.6 billion minutes of watch-time in the week ending April 10th. Ranking second among originals was 'The Ultimatum' garnered 838 million in its first 5 days of availability, easily outdoing Disney+'s 'Moon Knight' which had 608 million in its first full week. There wasn't really anything interesting on the movie-front with 'Encanto' holding the top spot (611 million), but among acquired programming, Netflix's 'Better Call Saul' made a strong first appearance on the chart, ranking #1 with 915 million. No doubt, people were catching up with the fifth season prior to the show's linear 6th season premiere.

NBA Playoffs Ratings and Out-of-Home

One of the major talking points on Sports Media Twitter recently has been the ratings for the 2022 NBA Playoffs, and in particular, how much of an impact out-of-home ratings have had in ballooning the viewership figures.

Nielsen began measuring out-of-home viewership in mid-2017, but initially would report those numbers separately from the linear ratings they put out each day. In September 2020, they began combining the out-of-home numbers with the daily linear numbers and reporting them as one. For scripted programming ratings this likely has had a negligible impact, but for sports programming - where communal viewing is much more common - there is a sizable impact. But how much exactly?

All-Time Top 100 SVOD Weekly Ratings

Below is a chart of the top 100 streaming (SVOD) performances based on minutes of watch-time in a single week. The chart will update automatically each week as new data comes in from Nielsen and shows at the bottom will drop off the chart as more programs populate the list over time. Original programming, movies, and acquired programming are all eligible to make this chart and the data goes back to the week ending August 9, 2020 - the week that Nielsen first began releasing the top SVOD ratings publicly.

There were 6 instances when a program logged over 3 billion minutes prior to August 9th and because Nielsen revealed those numbers, they are also included in this chart. Nielsen hasn't revealed the programs that had over 2 billion minutes prior to the August 9, 2020 list, so there are certainly programs/weeks that should be on this chart that aren't. Finally, this is just one of a series of streaming charts available on the site; for the rest of them, check out the Streaming Archive.

Top Streaming (SVOD) Ratings: Week Ending April 3, 2022

Below are the weekly streaming/video-on-demand (SVOD) ratings for the week ending April 3, 2022. The chart below includes the top 10 original programs, top 10 movies, and top 10 acquired programs from Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV+ measured on total minutes of watch-time. The data represents only viewing within the U.S. and comes from Nielsen Media Research.

Netflix's 'Bridgerton' crushed all competition on the streaming platforms in the week ending April 3rd with a huge 3.2 billion minutes of watch-time. This is only the 13th time that a streaming program has logged over 3 billion minutes in a single week since Nielsen began measuring. Bridgerton's total ranks 11th overall, ahead of 'Squid Game' (3.02 billion in the w/e Oct. 10, 2021) and behind 'You' (3.24 billion in the w/e Jan. 5, 2020). The overall record still belongs to 'Tiger King' which had 5.3 billion minutes in the week ending March 29, 2020.

'The Last Kingdom' ranked a far distant second among originals (714 million) while 'Is It Cake?' dipped to third and 'Inventing Anna' held at fourth. Also of note among originals was Disney+'s 'Moon Knight' which debuted with 418 million minutes in its first five days. On the movie-front, 'Encanto' returned to the summit (744 million), outdoing both 'Turning Red' (650 million) & Netflix's 'The Adam Project' (475 million) which had each taken turns atop the chart in the previous weeks. Finally, acquired programming was led by 'NCIS' and 'Cocomelon' - both will well over 600 million minutes.

Top Streaming (SVOD) Ratings: Week Ending March 27, 2022

Below are the weekly streaming/video-on-demand (SVOD) ratings for the week ending March 27, 2022.

The second season launch of Netflix's 'Bridgerton' propelled it to the top of the weekly streaming chart with nearly 2.55 billion minutes of watch-time. This was the most that a streaming program has been viewed in a single week since 'Inventing Anna' logged 3.28 billion in the week ending Feb. 20, 2022. This, despite second-season viewing of 'Bridgerton' only counting for the last 3 days of the tracking week while that 'Anna' total was from its first full week. Versus the first season, this total was on par with what 'Bridgerton' had in its first full week of availability (2.65 billion in the week ending Jan. 3, 2021), and more than double what it had in its first 3 days (1.2 billion in the week ending Dec. 27, 2020).

Elsewhere on the chart, Netflix's 'Is It Cake?' jumped to #2 among originals, 'The Last Kingdom' dipped to #3, and 'Human Resources' managed to hit #9 in its first full week after missing the chart last week. On the movie-front, Disney+'s 'Turning Red' (977 million) had a short-lived reign of only 2 weeks, falling to #2 this week behind Netflix's 'The Adam Project' (1.2 billion) which has shown impressive stability thus far. By comparison, Disney+'s 'Encanto' ruled at #1 for 10 consecutive weeks, 9 of which logged over 1 billion minutes. Finally, 'NCIS' and 'Cocomelon' remained 1-2 among acquired programming.

What a Top 150 Cable Chart Looks Like With Reruns Included: 4/4/22

I've seen a lot of discourse lately about what ShowBuzzDaily's cable rankers would look like if they included reruns. I personally do not care at all about rerun ratings - I've consistently removed them from every broadcast & cable ratings post I've ever done on this blog, but I do recognize that some people do care which is why I began including them in separate posts earlier last year. I think they unnecessarily clutter a normal cable ranker so I actually do appreciate that ShowBuzz limits their charts only to originals.

With that being said, below is just an example of what the chart would look like if reruns were included. The chart is from Monday, April 4, 2022 which is the most-recent Monday in which I have full cable data, and I think Monday is fairly representative of how the charts look like for the rest of the week. Rerun programming takes up more than half of the top 150 and on this chart, the #150-ranked program was #68 on ShowBuzz's list of the same day. I only included reruns up until #150 and then limited the list to the remainder of the 150 ShowBuzz originals with what their ranking would be in a rerun-included list.

Annoyingly, ShowBuzzDaily's data somehow mistakenly listed multiple airings of "Castle" (Lifetime) as originals even though they appear in my chart as reruns, so that was not super fun to rectify, but in the interest of making the originals here identical to their chart, they are listed as such. Additionally, this will not be a regular thing because I much prefer to do ratings on a weekly basis.

Final household (HH) ratings, 18-49 ratings, and viewership (in millions) are provided in the first chartThe bottom charts include data for cable programs that aired this week.

Weekly Nielsen Ratings: 1977-78 TV Season

Below are the weekly Nielsen ratings results for the 1977-78 television season. Viewership wasn't reported by Nielsen until the fall 1988 season, so up until that point the only metric widely available was the household rating (which is what is reported here in this article). To calculate the estimated number of households watching, just multiply each rating by 729,000 as that is what 1 rating point represents.

Full weekly household ratings for every show weren't made available until 1981, so only partial results are available for this season. The first week of the season actually does have full results available, but the rest of the weeks usually only have ratings information available for the top 10 programs (from The Associated Press). Beginning with the w/e May 21, 1978 and through w/e Aug. 6, 1978 there are the top 15 results available (from from The New York Times). Unfortunately, there is no ratings data available for the w/e Dec. 18, 1977 or Dec. 25, 1977 - only rankings.

Additionally, the second document includes full rankings (without ratings) from both The Miami News and The Fort Worth Star-Telegram and these are available for most weeks of the proper season (not the summer) except for the following: week ending Oct. 16, 1977 (only top 10), Oct. 30, 1977, Dec. 25, 1977, Jan. 1, 1978, Jan. 8, 1978, and Jan. 15, 1978 (all only top 20). The final week of full rankings is w/e May 28, 1978.

Weekly Nielsen Ratings: 1972-73 TV Season

Below are the weekly Nielsen ratings results for the 1972-73 television season. Viewership wasn't reported by Nielsen until the fall 1988 season, so up until that point the only metric widely available was the household rating (which is what is reported here in this article). To calculate the estimated number of households watching, just multiply each rating by 648,000 as that is what 1 rating point represents.

This season was an oddity in terms of ratings because it was the first season where full ratings were released for nearly every single week. Beginning with the week ending Oct. 8, 1972, The Los Angeles published both the full weekly rankings & ratings and they did this up until the week ending April 8, 1973. For the first week of the season (w/e Sept. 17, 1972) the full rankings are available from Broadcasting Magazine and the top 20 ratings are available from The Boston Globe. For the next 2 weeks of the season (Sept. 24 & Oct. 1, 1972), the full rankings and top 15 ratings are available from Broadcasting Magazine. The summer season is basically only reruns so it's not worth my time to try to dig up info for those 5 months.

Note: the week ending Dec. 31, 1972 was a Nielsen black week so there is no ratings information available that week. Additionally, The LA Times did not publish a list for the week ending March 25, 1973 so I had to use a number of other sources to compile as much of the rankings as I could. There is hardly any ratings data available for that week, but about half of the rankings are there.

Broadcast & Cable Nielsens: Week Ending March 24, 2002

Below are the Nielsen ratings for the 26th week of the 2001-02 television broadcast season; most reruns are excluded from the list. Final household (HH) ratings, 18-49 ratings, and viewership (in millions) are provided in the first chartThe bottom charts include data for cable programs that aired this week.

Academy Awards/Oscars Nielsen Ratings History (1953-present)

Below are the Nielsen ratings for every telecast of the Academy Awards. The ceremony was first aired on TV in 1953 after years of either being broadcast on the radio (1930-32, 1939-52) or not broadcast at all (1929, 1934-38). Household (HH) ratings are available for every telecast except for the 1961 show which aired during a Nielsen black week, 18-49 ratings are first available in 1992, and total viewership in 1974 (number of households is provided for 1953-73). Be aware that Nielsen did not introduce people-meters until 1987, so all viewership figures prior to that point are merely estimates Nielsen made at a later date.

Note: Only one source ever reported the numbers for the 1966 awards show: a Variety article from June 1966. That show also aired during a Nielsen black week, but ABC apparently made a special request to have the telecast nationally rated, so I believe this is the reason that such a massive 56.0 rating never appears in Nielsen's top 50 highest-rated list. This was also the first Oscars telecast to air in color so that could potentially be a reason why it was so highly rated. But also, the number could just be completely wrong since it is so much higher than anything else. Take that one with a grain of salt.

Top Streaming (SVOD) Ratings: Week Ending March 13, 2022

Below are the weekly streaming/video-on-demand (SVOD) ratings for the week ending March 13, 2022.

It was a strong week in streaming with a number of high-performing launches. Disney+'s new film 'Turning Red' easily took the top spot with just over 1.7 billion minutes of watch-time in its first 3 days of release, outdoing Netflix's new film 'The Adam Project' which collected 1.36 billion. With that, 'Encanto' dipped to #3 in the movie rankings (783 million), its first week not at #1 since the week ending Dec. 26, 2021 where it debuted at #7. In original programming, the fifth-season drop of Netflix's 'The Last Kingdom' logged an impressive 1.42 billion minutes in its first 5 days, slightly edging out 'Pieces of Her' which climbed to #2 in its first full week of availability. Finally, after 3 straight weeks atop the originals list, 'Inventing Anna' dipped to #3 with 812 million minutes.

18-49 Viewership to Ratings Converter

I'm introducing a new tool on this site which automatically converts 18-49 viewership into 18-49 ratings. The tool is available by clicking here or on the sidebar of the site under the "Other Data" heading. It is currently programmed to return ratings back until the 2004-05 TV season, but if I'm ever able to find Universe Estimates from the 2001-02, 2002-03, or 2003-04 seasons then those will be added as well.

I'm also hoping to add a (potentially more helpful) inverse calculation where the 18-49 rating would be inputted and the estimated 18-49 viewership is returned. That is slightly trickier because the calculator would have to return a range of values that fit within the rating, so I'm currently working on figuring out the best way to do that without having to calculate every single range by hand. If anyone has any ideas and/or is proficient in Javascript, please feel free to provide suggestions.

I'm happy to announce that the inverse calculation tool is also now available by clicking here. This tool will take any 1-decimal or 2-decimal 18-49 rating and return the corresponding range of 18-49 viewership figures from a particular season. This also goes back to the 2004-05 season but hopefully will be expanded back if additional Universe Estimates are found. I'm also going to try to make some functionality that allows for the calculation of wider ranges from 1-decimal 18-49 inputs.

Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards Ratings (1995-present)

Below are the Nielsen ratings for every SAG Awards broadcast beginning with the first one back in 1995. The awards show aired on NBC for its first 3 years where it was easily managing over 10 million viewers, but then moved to TNT beginning in 1998 where it has aired ever since. Beginning in 2006 the show was simulcast between TNT and TBS where it was regularly averaging between 5 and 6 million viewers cumulatively. The numbers started declining beginning around 2016 where for the next several years it was pulling between 2 and 3 million viewers. It hit a viewership low in 2021, logging just 957,000 viewers, but rebounded in 2022 up to 1.84 million. Note: no ratings info is known for the 1998 show, and the only ratings info available for the 1999 show was that it pulled a 2.7 cable rating which roughly translates to a 2.0-2.1 U.S. HH rating.

The Walking Dead (AMC): Ratings Recap

AMC's 'The Walking Dead' premiered October 31, 2010 to a really strong 2.7/7 adults 18-49 rating/share and 5.35 million viewers, averaging nearly a 2.7 rating & 5.24 million over the course of its short first season and establishing itself as one of the top-rated cable shows of 2010. The show absolutely soared in the ratings over the next four seasons, rising to a 7.4 rating & 14.38 million viewers on-average for its fifth season in 2014 & 2015; easily making it the top-rated and most-viewed cable series at the time. The numbers slowly began declining after that, but were still monstrous compared to everything else on air: holding above 5.0 in the demo and 11 million viewers for the next two seasons before dipping to below a 2.0 rating & under 5 million viewers for its ninth season in 2018 & 2019. An 11th and final season began airing in late-summer/early-fall 2021 and has logged a 0.46 rating & 1.8 million viewers on-average for its first 16 episodes. The last 8 episodes are rumored to air in fall 2022.

Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency (BBC America): Ratings Recap

One of my really good friends, and my travel companion on the recent trip to LA, is big fan of BBC America's short-lived program 'Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency' and so I've heard all about this show for a while now. So it seemed apt to finally do a recap of its ratings. The show premiered October 22, 2016 to an OK 0.12 adults 18-49 rating and 437,000 viewers, but spent the majority of its 8-episode first season at around 0.09 in the demo and between 200K-300K viewers which was apparently high enough to warrant a second-season renewal. The second season aired in fall 2017 and rated just slightly below the first, at 0.07 in the demo and about 250,000 viewers. It was not renewed for a third season and aired just 18 episodes over the course of its run.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer (WB/UPN): Ratings Recap

'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' premiered on the WB March 10, 1997 with a 3.2/5 household rating/share and 4.59 million viewers - solid numbers based on the low-rated WB network was getting at the time. It sunk to as few as 2.47 million viewers in its short 12-episode first season, but rebounded up to 4 million by its finale. The show's ratings soared in its second season, averaging 5.7 million viewers and reaching well over 7 million (and over 3.0 in the 18-49 demo) for a slew of episodes in January 1998. The show's third season logged the highest average viewership of any season (6.1 million) despite some scheduling weirdness which pushed the high-rated season finale (6.53 million viewers; 3.1/10 A18-49) out to mid-July 1999. 'Buffy' remained remarkably stable for the next few seasons, pulling in over 5.2 million viewers on-average and holding at comfortably higher than a 2.0 demo rating. The show moved networks over to UPN where its sixth season premiere was reported to have logged the highest 18-49 rating (3.8/10) and second-best viewership (7.65 million) of its entire run, and viewership for the season as a whole actually averaged slightly higher than the previous 2 WB runs at 5.34 million. A seventh and final season premiered in 2002 with the fall portion holding at just around 5 million viewers, but unfortunately the 2003 portion fell into the 3-4 million range and below a 2.0 A18-49 rating and the show was not renewed. Note: I only have very limited 18-49 information for the first 3 seasons, but there is full data beginning with season 4.

Sporadic posting for the next week

Hello, starting tomorrow and for the next week or so I will be away in Los Angeles, so I will be not be posting any old 2000-2002 ratings data until I return. I will try to have the top 200 reruns for the week ending March 6th posted on Monday per usual, but the broadcast, cable ratings, and news ratings may be delayed until next Thursday or Friday.

Also, just as an update: I recently finished posting all of the data from the 2009-10 TV season and have transitioned over to working on summer & fall 2014/spring 2015. I will return to do the 2010-11 season at some point (hopefully before summer), but I've felt compelled to do 2014-15 for a while now, so I just want to get that over with. The posts from this period are being back-dated and this will be continue to be the case for all posts in the 2013-14 season & 2014-15 season. When they are eventually completed, the 2010-11, 2011-12, and 2012-13 seasons will posted as normal and not back-dated.

Finally, my goal is to have the 2000-01, 2001-02, and 2002-03 seasons completed by the end of the summer.

Ryan :)

Intruders (BBC America): Ratings Recap

BBC America's 'The Intruders' premiered August 23, 2014 to a 0.23 adults 18-49 rating and 796,000 viewers, which in any other circumstance would've been great numbers for the network. But this program had a sizable 'Doctor Who' lead-in of 0.85 & 2.2 million which it was only able to hold about a third. In week 2 it tumbled down to 0.08 & 366,000 viewers and remained well-below even that low mark for the rest of its run - holding only about a fourth of the 'Doctor Who' numbers. Needless to say, it was not renewed for a second season.

Euphoria (HBO): Ratings Recap

HBO's 'Euphoria' premiered June 16, 2019 to a 0.17 adults 18-49 rating with 577,000 viewers and averaged 560,000 linear TV viewers over the course of its first 8 episodes. Based on the available data, linear viewers seemed to account for about half of total same-night viewership during the first season with HBO reporting 1.2 million multi-platform viewers for the first season finale. A second season aired two-and-a-half years later and saw a significant decline in linear viewership, premiering to just 254,000 viewers and averaging below 350,000 throughout its run. Interestingly, the multi-platform portion of the audience rose to nearly 90% this season according to HBO's numbers, so with those figures included, the show averaged about 4 million viewers per episode. It concluded its second-season with the largest linear audience (625,000) and largest multi-platform audience (6.6 million) of its entire run and will be back for a third season. Note: I included a table at the bottom with ratings for the second season same-night re-airings, but I don't have that data for the first season. Additionally, I included HBO's reported multi-platform viewers (presented in millions) in the tables for episodes that the data was available for (even though the validity of these numbers is in dispute).

Below is the season-to-date median age data for all of the primetime broadcast programs (excluding specials) that have aired since September 20, 2021. The column "#TC" is the total number of telecasts that are included in the median age column. Unfortunately, I don't have access to this data at a week-by-week level, and don't know of any site that posts it anymore since Programming Insider lost access to it. FOX's Sunday comedy block has, by far, the youngest-skewing shows on broadcast with 'Bob's Burgers' the youngest (median age: 46.9) and 'Family Guy' (47.0), 'Great North' (48.7), and 'The Simpsons' (49.8) just behind.

Premium Cable Versus the Super Bowl

This was the Super Bowl-related post I was going to make before seeing NBC's press release and switching gears over to write something about that. I've always been fascinated by the decision making of networks to air new episodes of programs at the same time that the Super Bowl is airing. As the game is - by far - the largest ratings generator of the year, and towers above everything else, it seems odd on the surface for networks to continue with regularly scheduled programming while it is airing. Yet, a few still do.

Curb Your Enthusiasm (HBO): Ratings Recap

HBO's 'Curb Your Enthusiasm' premiered October 15, 2000 to a 2.1 HH rating and 3.1 million viewers, but tumbled in its second week to 1.8 million and was reported to have averaged 1.2 million viewers in its first 10 episodes (but I don't have enough information to verify this). A second season aired in fall 2001 with most of its episodes airing on the same nights as HBO's huge miniseries 'Band of Brothers'. HBO's ratings in this time were very high in-general, so the majority of the season 2 episodes were not in the weekly top 5, and as a result: only data for 2 of the season's episodes are available. Assuming the numbers for those episodes are in-line for the rest of the season, it looks like the show performed much better than it did in first, likely in the mid-2 millions. The third season (2002) represented the peak of the show's performance, airing behind the highest-rated season of 'The Sopranos' where it took full advantage - averaging about 4.5 million viewers. It also received a slight boost in its fourth season (3.1 million) which initially aired behind the final season of 'Sex and the City' with the last 2 episodes airing behind the fifth-season of 'The Sopranos.' The numbers crumbled after that though, to 1.3 million in 2005 (airing behind the moderately-rated 'Rome'), and to 965,000 in 2007 (where it had no notable lead-in). It managed to pick up steam in the next two seasons, averaging about 1.2 million 2009 and just under 2 million in 2011, but then took a 6-year break and returned back down just over 1 million in fall 2017. It declined even further in 2020 (663,000) and fell to its lowest numbers ever in 2021 (441,000). There is no word yet on the status of a 12th season. Note: due to the lack of data available, the viewership average for season 6 comes from an official published source (The Los Angeles Times).

The Circus (Showtime): Ratings Recap

Showtime's 'The Circus' premiered January 17, 2016 to a minuscule 0.02 adults 18-49 rating and 97,000 viewers and nearly doubled in its second week before settling at about 0.06 in the demo and just under 200K viewers on-average. Unfortunately, full ratings data isn't available for the first season and there is no data available at all for the second season, but the the next four seasons all managed around 0.03-0.05 in the demo and was in the low-to-mid 200K viewers which is not exactly a shining performance, but there is something to be said for stability. That apparently is good enough for Showtime which has renewed the series for a seventh season.

Getting On (HBO): Ratings Recap

HBO's 'Getting On' premiered November 24, 2013 to a low 520,000 viewers, but the 18-49 rating is unfortunately not known. It was never a high-ratings generator for HBO with the first season episodes mostly pulling just over 300K viewers and the following 2 seasons in the mid-to-high 200K range. It lasted longer than can probably be expected considering those numbers, but since its seasons only had 6 episodes, it only aired 18 episodes over the course of its 3 seasons. Note: the ratings for episodes 2-6 of the first season come from a source with direct access to Nielsen ratings and are not the primetime averages reported in The Futon Critic.

Some Broadcast Subdemos: Week Ending February 6, 2022

These days, sub-demographic ratings data for broadcast programs is not nearly as readily available as it is for cable programs. ShowBuzzDaily obviously posts 8 different sub-demos daily for the top 50 cable programs, but for broadcast, they unfortunately only provide demographic shares for men & women 18-49. I see some of this data every so often, but only for the higher-rated programs, so here is a peak at some of the sub-demos for the most-recent week I have data for. If a particular sub-demo isn't included for a show then I don't have it.

Super Bowl LVI Ratings Comparisons: What is the Truth?

Network spin is nothing new, and nothing I haven't talked about in-depth before - most recently in regards to HBO and "Euphoria." However, there really isn't anything quite like Super Bowl-spin. It being by far the most-watched event of the year, its ratings are reported in basically any and every U.S. news publication you can think of, and this reporting is often lifted directly from the network press release. NBC's press release is actually not bad as it's pretty transparent with the ratings; my only qualm is with the historical comparisons.

Looking at the linear TV viewership, Nielsen reported 99.178 million viewers for the game, and NBC does acknowledge this figure in their release - rounding it to an even 99.2 million. Nielsen also reported, and NBC acknowledges, an additional 1.91 million viewers on Spanish-language network Telemundo. Together, this is a linear TV total of about 101.09 million viewers. All of that is fine. The issue comes with how the streaming audience is integrated into their Total Audience Delivery (TAD) figure.

Ratings for the 2022 AFC & NFC Championship Games

While we await the ratings for Super Bowl LVI, I thought it would be interesting to take a look at the numbers from the 2 conference championship games from 2 weeks ago. To begin, 2022 marked the third straight year of the NFC game beating the AFC game (2020, 2021, 2022) in total viewership after the AFC game dominated the previous four years (2016, 2017, 2018, 2019). Detailed breakdowns are provided for each game below:

Top Streaming (SVOD) Ratings: w/e Dec. 19, 2021 - w/e Jan. 16, 2022

I have not done as good a job at keeping up with posting the weekly Nielsen streaming ratings as I would've liked to, so here are the charts for the most-recent five weeks of data. Even if/when the weekly posts are delayed, I always update the individual show charts which are located in the "Streaming Archive" under the "Ratings Archive Directory" tab.

Per usual, the charts below includes the top 10 original programs, top 10 movies, and top 10 acquired programs from Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV+ measured on total minutes of watch-time. The data represents only viewing within the U.S. and comes from Nielsen Media Research.

It has been a very strong five weeks on streaming with a number of 2 billion+ minute performances. First, Netflix debuted the second season 'The Witcher' Dec. 17th, and it ranked atop the chart for 2 straight weeks with 2.19 billion minutes in its first 3 days of availability and an additional 2.73 billion the week after. It likely would've remained atop the chart for a few more weeks had it not been for the fourth-season drop of 'Cobra Kai' which delivered 2.43 billion minutes in its first 3 days (week ending Jan. 2) and held at #1 among originals the following 2 weeks. Both dwarfed the second-season launch of 'Emily in Paris' which had 938 million in its first 5 days and 1.11 billion the week after. Among movies, the story of the last 2 months has been Disney+'s 'Encanto' which logged its first full week at an impressive 2.2 billion minutes and then spent the next two weeks at just around 1.5 billion (leading among all streaming programs in the w/e Jan. 16). Finally, among acquired programming, 'Cocomelon' reached 11 straight weeks at #1 before finally (and likely temporarily) being dethroned by 'NCIS'.

There are several columns of data in the chart below, including HH data (presented in ratings form & viewership form), average viewership, and total viewership for every game. Average viewership is the standard viewership metric while total viewership refers to the number of unique people who watched at least 6 minutes of the broadcast.
