Top Chef (Bravo): Ratings Recap

Bravo's 'Top Chef' premiered March 8, 2006 to a 0.7 adults 18-49 rating and 1.3 million viewers, fell hard in its second week, but ended up growing its audience up to 1.5 million by its first season finale. the show grew its ratings in each of the next 4 seasons, reaching its peak in its fifth season (2008-09) where it averaged over 3 million viewers per episode. It steadily declined over the next several seasons before finally falling below 1 million viewers on-average for the first time in season 12 (2014-15). Over the next 6 seasons, its ratings remained incredibly steady at between 800K-1M viewers, but it dipped to its lowest numbers yet in 2022's season 19 where it pulled 725,000. It has been renewed for a 20th season which is expected to air in 2023.

Trust Me (TNT): Ratings Recap

TNT's 'Trust Me' premiered January 26, 2009 to a 1.0 adults 18-49 rating and 3.4 million viewers; OK numbers for scripted cable at the time but definitely not anything spectacular. It fell to a 0.6 & 1.9 million viewers in its second week and tumbled to only 876,000 by its 7th week. Clearly on the chopping block, TNT opted to burn off the remaining 6 episodes over 3 days and the program concluded to just a 0.2 rating & 426,000 viewers.

Pocketpiece Project

Over the last several months I've been doing a lot of research about Nielsen Pocketpieces with the goal of tracking down as many as I can, digitizing them, and ultimately hosting them on the blog. For those unfamiliar with Pocketpieces, they are booklets that Nielsen sent out to TV networks and advertisers biweekly (and later weekly) from the 1950s through 2007 which included a comprehensive accounting of TV ratings. Although they were released through 2007, I'm particularly interested in the ones through 1981 as there is very little publicly released ratings data prior to that point.

Recently & with some help, I've managed to find a nearly complete collection of them across multiple sources and have begun the process of digitizing them. Unfortunately, I am based in New York City and the Pocketpieces in question are located in Washington, DC and Los Angeles so there will be a lot of travel involved over the next year or several years in order to get them all, but that is the next major project on this site. I'm not sure how Nielsen is going to feel about this, so it remains to be seen if this is something that will ever see completion, but I can't imagine that they'll care all that much about 40-50+ year old data.

I'm also not sure how I'm going to organize this within the current layout of the blog, but as I get more of them posted then I'll make some changes to better accommodate. I'm also quite aware that I have not yet finished posting the 2002-03 season, let alone the more recent 2010-2013 seasons, so that is also on the radar, but life has gotten very busy this fall and I can only focus my attentions on so many things. Hopefully 2002-03 will be finished soon.

Sanctuary (Syfy): Ratings Recap

Syfy's 'Sanctuary' premiered October 3, 2008 to a strong 0.8 adults 18-49 rating and 2.72 million viewers, but fell to just under 2 million viewers in its second week and averaged about the same throughout its first season. A second season premiered in fall 2009, but declined more than a tenth in the demo and to about 1.5 million viewers on-average. The third season premiered in fall 2010 and initially pulled similar numbers to the second season, but ratings tumbled after an ill-fated move to Monday nights in spring 2011 - falling as low as 656,000. Weekly Nielsen Top 10 Ratings (1950-1959)

UPDATED 2023 WITH MISSING OCTOBER 4, 1959

Below is an index of nearly every Nielsen Top 10 TV ratings list from the 1950s. The first TV ratings ever released by Nielsen were for the month of March 1950 and Nielsen continued releasing data at a monthly cadence (though 2 weeks out of the month were measured) until September 1950 when they switched to releasing data bimonthly based on 2 weeks of viewing. At this time, Nielsen had 4 weeks per year that were considered "black weeks" where they did not release any data (more on "black weeks" can be found here). This is a nearly complete index of the top 10 weekly primetime programs with only 4 releases missing out of 230.

Ratings Archive by Program: Broadcast (1991-92 Season)

This post is features the full Nielsen ratings for all first-run regular Broadcast primetime programs that aired during the 1991-92 TV Season. For cable programs, I normally do a full "Ratings Recap" for each show, but because of the sheer volume of broadcast programs and episodes, it just isn't feasible to do that for every major broadcast program. Instead, I've taken all the data I've posted on the site and organized it by season and then by network in Google Sheets. Within each embedded sheet, programs are organized into tabs with their full season data available in each tab. For this season, HH data and viewership data is available for every first-run episode. There isn't any data here that isn't already posted in the weekly posts, but this is just a different way of looking at it.

The weekly 1991-92 weekly ratings post has also been updated with these typed-out charts.

Nielsen Pocketpiece: May 1960 - 1st Report

A very kind person provided me a Nielsen "pocketpiece" from May of 1960 which includes the complete National Nielsen ratings for the weeks ending May 1st and May 8th. Nielsen released these booklets bimonthly at this period of time and they've become quite difficult to find now, so I don't know if I'll ever be able to post any others, but here's hoping!

New Calculators Added to the Site

Several months ago I added 2 calculators here on the site which enabled the conversion between ratings and impressions (viewers) within the 18-49 demographic. The key driver behind adding this was the fact that most of the weekly ratings posts between 2001-2006 include a cable A18-49 top 10 presented in impressions (000s) and I wanted to make it easy to convert those figures into ratings points.

Today, I have added 2 more converters that enable conversion between ratings and impressions for households (HH). All weekly ratings prior to the 1987-88 season only include the HH rating, but no impression information, so this allows the seamless extraction of impression info. Similar to the 18-49 calculators, when converting from ratings to impressions the calculator will return a range of values that fit within that rating.

The 18-49 calculators are programmed back to the 2000-01 TV season, but the HH calculators are able to go back to the 1977-78 season, and may be pushed back even further over time. Both calculators are compatible with 1, 2, or 3 decimal place ratings. Click the links below or see the sidebar for access to the new calculators.

Kids Choice Awards Ratings (1994-present)

UPDATED 2023: Below are the Nielsen ratings for every televised Kids Choice Awards telecast beginning with 1994. HH ratings and viewership are included for every show, but 18-49 data isn't available until 2008. Ratings peaked back in 2009 when the show delivered a 1.5 P18-49 rating and 7.68 million viewers, but has fallen in recent years, pulling just a 0.18 rating & 593,000 viewers in 2022. This only includes viewership for the primary airing on Nickelodeon and doesn't include any simulcasts; I might add simulcast data in at some point in the future.

Friends (NBC): Ratings Recap

NBC's 'Friends' premiered Sept. 22, 1994 to a 14.7/23 HH rating/share with 21.5 million viewers and from the get-go was one of the highest-rated and most-viewed TV programs of the 1990s and early 2000s. The show peaked in its second-season where it averaged 30.8 million viewers, but even after that, it pulled incredibly high numbers in all subsequent seasons. Seasons three through five were all at 13.0 and above in the A18-49 demo, and even in the last 5 seasons, the show only averaged below an 11.0 rating once (season 7). In all 10 seasons the show remained above 20 million viewers, and it concluded in May 2004 to an astounding 24.9/54 demo score & 52.5 million viewers. Note: HH ratings are used in seasons 1 & 2 but switch to A18-49 beginning with season 3.

The Big C (Showtime): Ratings Recap

Showtime's 'The Big C' premiered August 16, 2010 to a 0.5 A18-49 rating & 1.15 million viewers, strong retention behind the fifth season premiere of 'Weeds' lead-in (0.6 & 1.26 million). The show actually had good retention throughout its first season, averaging a 0.38 rating & 831,000 viewers vs. 0.46 & 938,000 for 'Weeds.' Its second season saw significant declines, down to 0.22 & 574,000 on-average, and the third season dipped even further to 0.19 & 480,000. A short 4-episode fourth season aired in 2013 down to 0.1 in the demo with 283,000 viewers and the show was cancelled.

American Horror Story (FX): Ratings Recap

FX's 'American Horror Story' premiered October 5, 2011 to a solid 1.6 A18-49 rating with 3.18 million viewers and held in the high-2 millions throughout its first season, ultimately averaging a 1.6 & 2.82 million viewers. Following a slight decline in its second season, the show's ratings peaked in its third where it logged a 2.2 rating & 4 million viewers. Its fourth season dipped a bit to a still-great 1.9 rating & 3.9 million viewers, but then lost a million viewers down to 2.9 million in its fifth and sixth seasons. Numbers declined pretty consistently for the next few seasons, and its most-recent 10th season pulled just a 0.23 rating & 652,000 viewers in fall 2021. FX has renewed the series through season 13.

The Artful Detective/Murdoch Mysteries (Ovation): Ratings Recap

'Murdoch Mysteries' is a Canadian drama series that premiered January 20, 2008 on Bravo! in Canada. It made its U.S. debut on Ovation network on July 27, 2013 under the title 'The Artful Detective' and aired under that title until season 12 when it reverted to 'Murdoch Mysteries.' U.S. viewership data is unavailable for the first seven seasons which Ovation burned through quickly by airing the program weekly from Jul. 27, 2013 through Feb. 14, 2015. The 8th season was the first to air closely in-line with the Canadian broadcast and continued to do so for all subsequent seasons. The ratings have been relatively steady throughout its U.S. run albeit not good. In the 18-49 demo, it averaged a 0.01 demo rating in seasons eight through 15, but fell to a zero rating for 2022's 16th season. In viewership, it has been consistent at between 100K-200K viewers except for a slightly higher-viewed 15th season which logged 234,000. A 16th season is expected to air in 2023.

Girls (HBO): Ratings Recap

HBO's 'Girls' premiered April 15, 2012 to a 0.4 adults 18-49 rating and 872,000 viewers and rather than seeing any significant declines, it actually improved its ratings throughout its first season: concluding to a 0.5 and over 1 million viewers. It remained relatively steady throughout its next two seasons, both averaging a rounded 0.4 demo rating, but then dipped to 0.3 for its last three seasons. In viewership, the show consistently put up solid numbers for HBO with nearly every season well over 600,000 except for 2016's fifth season which had the show's lowest numbers (543,000). It aired a total of 62 episodes over the course of six seasons and concluded in 2017.

Band of Brothers (HBO): Ratings Recap

'Band of Brothers' was an HBO miniseries that premiered Sept. 9, 2001 with a really strong 9.9 million viewers - one of HBO's highest-rated premieres ever. Viewership dipped in the following weeks to 7.27 million and 6.29 million and it's hard to know if this was just normal loss of interest or whether it had partially to do with the events of 9/11 which happened two days after the first episode. 'Band of Brothers' was one of few programs that continued airing as scheduled after 9/11 as most everything on the broadcast networks were delayed a week. Either way, the show concluded with the lowest numbers of its run (3.2 HH rating & 5.05 million viewers) though even these numbers would've gotten any regular HBO series easily renewed.

Impress Me (Pop): Ratings Recap

Pop's 'Impress Me' premiered March 18, 2015 with a relatively good 'Schitt's Creek' lead-in (161,000 & 0.05) though was only able to hold about a quarter of that audience (48,000) and less than half of the demo (0.02). Things didn't improve from there, falling as low as 0.01 in the demo & 21,000 viewers and averaging just 44,000 viewers over 13 episodes. Needless to say, it was not renewed for a second season.

Man at Arms: Art of War (El Rey): Ratings Recap

'Man at Arms: Art of War' premiered June 8, 2017 on the micro-rated El Rey Network to a 0.02 adults 18-49 rating and 85,000 viewers. Though the first season numbers (0.02 rating & 57,000 viewers on-average) look bad, they were actually not terrible for El Rey. Unfortunately, the numbers plummeted in its second season down to zero adults 18-49 and just 25,000 viewers which led to its cancellation.

Rock This Boat (Pop): Ratings Recap

Pop's 'Rock This Boat' premiered January 14, 2015 with an hour-long episode which logged a 0.09 adults 18-49 rating with 219,000 viewers - solid numbers for Pop network. It fell into the mid-100Ks for the rest of its first season, ultimately averaging a 0.06 & 170,000 viewers. A second season aired in summer 2016 and began very low (68,000) but recovered up to 125,000 on-average & a 0.04 rating, neither of which were good enough to warrant a third season renewal.

Wolf Creek (Pop): Ratings Recap

Pop's 'Wolf Creek' premiered October 14, 2016 to a tiny 0.01 in the demo and 68,000 viewers. It had a really short run of only 6 episodes, but high a ratings high in its final episode where it scored a 0.03 rating & 160,000 viewers which helped push its series average to 105,000. It was not renewed for additional seasons.

Cleverman (Sundance TV): Ratings Recap

Sundance TV's 'Cleverman' was an Australian import that premiered June 1, 2016 to a 0.04 adults 18-49 rating & 197,000 viewers. It held most of its audience that season, averaging a 0.04 and about 150,000 viewers - not terrible numbers for Sundance. However the numbers tumbled by half in show's second season (2017) to a 0.02 rating and ~70,000 viewers.

Return of the Mac (Pop): Ratings Recap

Pop Network's 'Return of the Mac' was a short-lived series that aired in spring 2017. The show debuted with a 0.02 demo rating & 69,000 viewers and basically remained around that mark through its 8 episodes. It hit a demo & viewership high in its second episode (0.03 & 91,000), but concluded to just 44,000 viewers and averaged 60,000 which was not enough to warrant a second season renewal.

Hollywood Darlings (Pop): Ratings Recap

Pop's 'Hollywood Darlings' premiered a preview episode on April 5, 2017 to a 0.03 adults 18-49 rating & 103,000 viewers and pulled similar numbers for its regular timeslot premiere a week later (0.03 & 118,000). In relation to Pop scripted programming, the show actually pulled OK numbers, averaging a 0.03 rating in both seasons and well over 100K viewers, but it was not renewed for a third season.

Nightcap (Pop): Ratings Recap

Pop's 'Nightcap' premiered November 16, 2016 with a double episode at 0.02/0.01 in the demo and 146,000/74,000 viewers. Interestingly, ratings for the remainder of the first season were much more in-line with that first episode rather than the second, holding well above 130,000 viewers. A second season aired in summer 2017 and fell to a minuscule 0.01 demo rating and just over 100K viewers which was apparently not enough to warrant a third season.

Gomorrah (Sundance TV): Ratings Recap

'Gomorrah' is an Italian drama series that aired in U.S. on SundanceTV. It bowed August 24, 2016 to a 0.03 adults 18-49 rating with 126,000 viewers, but only averaged a 0.02 & 94,000 over its first 6 episodes. Sundance aired a second season in 2017 and the numbers did not get any better - falling to 0.01 & 63,000 on-average, and the last 3 seasons of the show never aired on linear TV in the U.S. They were; however, launched on HBO Max in 2021 and 2022 though obviously no viewership data is available for it.

The Circus (Showtime): Ratings Recap

Showtime's 'The Circus' is a political docuseries that premiered January 17, 2016 with the initial goal of documenting the 2016 presidential election though that scope broadened in subsequent seasons. It has been a fairly consistent ratings performer for the network, consistently at or above 0.03 in the 18-49 demo and 200,000 viewers which is more than can be said about most of Showtime's scripted originals at the moment. The show peaked in its fourth season (2019) when it averaged a 0.05 rating & nearly 250,000 viewers, but has dipped to 0.02 & ~180,000 viewers in the first half of its current 7th season. The second half of the season is scheduled to air fall 2022.

Couples Therapy (Showtime): Ratings Recap

Showtime's 'Couples Therapy' premiered September 6, 2019 to a low 0.02 adults 18-49 rating & 87,000 viewers which would actually end up being the best it would do in its first season which averaged just 0.01 & 48,000. A second season aired in 2021 and was modestly better at 65,000 viewers, but the third season (2022) crumbled to zero in the demo and 35,000 viewers. The status of a fourth season is uncertain.

Baroness Von Sketch Show (IFC): Ratings Recap

IFC's 'Baroness Von Sketch Show' premiered August 2, 2017 to a minuscule 0.03 adults 18-49 rating with 130,000 viewers, on par with what IFC originals tend to pull. Its first three seasons all delivered similar numbers, averaging about 0.03 in the demo and ~100,000 viewers, but viewership fell by almost half in its fourth season (2019) to 51,000. A fifth aired in 2020 & 2021 and recovered some lost viewership (up to 81,000), but the show was not renewed for a sixth season.

This Close (Sundance TV): Ratings Recap

The first season of Sundance's 'This Close' premiered exclusively on the Sundance NOW streaming platform February 14, 2018, so there is no ratings data available for it. However, the second season of the program aired on Sundance TV in late-summer 2019 with 2 episodes airing on consecutive Thursdays and Fridays. It started off OK with a 0.03 rating & 154,000 viewers, but wasn't able to hold those numbers - finishing with a 0.01 & 50,000 viewers.

The A Word (Sundance TV): Ratings Recap

Sundance TV's 'The A Word' first premiered in July 2016 to a minuscule 0.02 adults 18-49 rating & 100,000 viewers which would end up being the peak of its ratings performance. The remainder of the season pulled about half that and despite averaging just 62,000 viewers it was renewed for a second season. The second season aired in fall 2017 and the third season aired in fall 2020, both of which delivered near-identical numbers to the first. There is no word yet on a fourth season.

Important Update Regarding Ratings

There have been some major changes in my life recently that, sadly, are going to affect what I do here on this site. I graduated from college this past May, and after 5 years of living in Boston, I'm moving to NYC to pursue a very exciting job opportunity in the field of television advertising. Due to the nature of this company and this role, it's a conflict of interest for me to continue posting current-day Nielsen ratings data even if I'm not using my access as the source for it. So, unfortunately I'm no longer going to be able to post weekly rerun, broadcast, cable, and news data here. And also going forward, all requests will have to go through the "contact me" form in the sidebar, not Disqus.

On a positive note, Andy over at SpoilerTV has graciously agreed to start posting a lot of this data over at his site. SpoilerTV will be doing a weekly top 200 reruns post, a weekly top 400 cable originals post, and a weekly top 200 cable sports post. So, nearly all of the data I was posting before will still be available, it just will be on SpoilerTV rather than here. Additionally, the 18-49 data there will be to 3-decimal places rather than the previous 2.

Here is a link to the first weekly rerun recap at SpoilerTV for the week of July 18-24: https://www.spoilertv.com/2022/07/top-200-cable-reruns-week-ending-24th.html

Here is a link to the first weekly cable top 400 originals for the week of July 18-24: https://www.spoilertv.com/2022/07/top-400-cable-shows-week-ending-24th.html

Here is a link to the first weekly top 200 cable sports programs for the week of July 18-24: https://www.spoilertv.com/2022/07/top-200-cable-sports-week-ending-24th.html

I'm still planning on continuing to post the historical data here for now, so now my efforts will now be solely focused on that because there is still quite a lot more to finish. My (ambitious) goal is still to have the 2002-03 season completed by the end of the summer and the 2010-11 season started and completed by the end of the year. I'm really glad people are using these archives, and find them helpful.

Top Streaming (SVOD) Ratings: Week Ending June 12, 2022

Below are the weekly streaming/video-on-demand (SVOD) ratings for the week ending June 12, 2022. The chart below includes the top 10 original programs, top 10 movies, and top 10 acquired programs from Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, HBO Max, and Apple TV+ measured on total minutes of watch-time. The data represents only viewing within the U.S. and comes from Nielsen Media Research.

Netflix's 'Stranger Things' spent a third consecutive dominant week atop the Nielsen SVOD ratings with over 4.2 billion minutes of watch-time in the week ending June 12th. This was down from the previous week's record-breaking 7.2 billion minutes, but still ranks at #6 all-time. With numbers from 'The Lincoln Lawyer' (683 million) & Disney+'s 'Obi-Wan Kenobi' (682 million) falling, Amazon's 'The Boys' rose to #2 this week among originals, logging 919 million minutes in the first full week of third season availability. Also of note among originals, Netflix's 'Peaky Blinders' made its first ever chart appearance (635 million) with the drop of its final season on Jun. 10th, and Disney+'s 'Ms. Marvel' debuted with 249 million in its first 3 days. On the movie-side, Netflix's 'Hustle' roared to the top with 1.22 billion minutes in its first full week despite missing the chart completely the previous week, but 'Interceptor' managed far fewer at 413 million. Finally, 'All American' again led acquired programming (1.15 billion) with 'NCIS' and 'Cocomelon' just behind.

2002-03 Season on Temporary Pause

UPDATED: this is complete!

I've recently uncovered an additional data source for 2001-2003 which provides more detailed information regarding airdates and airtimes of cable programs. Most of the cable charts I've posted so far from that timeframe do not specify the time that a program aired and about half do not even specify the date that a program aired. This can make it problematic & confusing when there are multiple listings for a single program in a given week. With the data from this new data source, I'm going to go back into the previous 2 seasons worth of posts and update the charts. These updates will include:
  • More detailed information regarding airdates and airtimes in the cable viewership and HH charts (w/e May 27, 2001 through Nov. 17, 2002)
  • Weekly top 10 cable 18-49 charts for most of the weeks that were previously missing them (Jul. 29, 2001, Sept. 30, 2001, Oct. 28, 2001, Nov. 18, 2001, Nov. 25, 2001, Dec. 30, 2001, Mar. 31, 2002, Jun. 30, 2002)
  • Including the top 40 weekly cable programs by HH instead of just top 20 (Jun. 16, 2002 through Nov. 17, 2002)
  • Broadcast sports ratings for programs outside of primetime (Oct. 8, 2000 through Jun. 24, 2001, and Sept. 30, 2001 through Dec. 23, 2001)
I've already started this process beginning with fall 2001 - all of the posts from Sept. 30 - Nov. 25, 2001 have already been updated. But to make all of these updates, I'm going to have to temporarily pause posting the 2002-03 ratings for about a week or 2.

Nielsen SVOD Ratings: Movies Archive (first charted in 2022)

Below is an archive of Nielsen streaming/video-on-demand (SVOD) ratings organized by program title (A-Z). This post in particular includes only programs that are listed as "movies" that made their first chart appearance in 2022. There are other archives posted with "original" programs, "acquired" programs and for "movies" that first charted in other years. These tables include every single week of SVOD data that Nielsen has put out since the week ending Jan. 2, 2022. The first sheet is an index which lists of all of the available movies with data, how many weeks each has appeared in the Nielsen chart, as well as both the most-recent week they've appeared and the first week they appeared. Unlike the archives for original and acquired programs, there are simply too many movies for there to be a tab for each one individually, so they are sorted by distribution platform and then organized alphabetically within each platform tab.

Nielsen SVOD Ratings: Movies Archive (first charted 2020 or 2021)

Below is an archive of Nielsen streaming/video-on-demand (SVOD) ratings organized by program title (A-Z). For some reason, Nielsen never officially released the SVOD streaming ratings for the week ending May 29th - their public website skipped from w/e May 22 to w/e June 5th, so I had to dig up as many of the ratings as I could from trade publications. I've reached out to some people to see if I can get the rest of the week's top 10s, and this post will be updated if I get them. UPDATED WITH FULL CHART

The chart below includes the top 10 original programs, top 10 movies, and top 10 acquired programs from Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV+ measured on total minutes of watch-time. The data represents only viewing within the U.S. and comes from Nielsen Media Research.

Netflix's 'Ozark' spent a third consecutive week atop the Nielsen SVOD ratings chart, logging 1.73 billion minutes of watch-time in the w/e May 15th. Though this was down by about half from last week's 3.33 billion, it was still more than double second-ranked 'The Lincoln Lawyer' which managed 884 million in its first 3 days of availability. With that 'Grace and Frankie' (584 million) dipped to 3rd among originals, just ahead of Hulu's 'Candy' which had 577 million in its first week. We had new faces atop the movie chart with Netflix's 'Senior Year' taking the top spot with 797 million in its first 3 days and 'Our Father' ranking second with 450 million in its first 5 days. This pushed Disney+'s 'Encanto' down to #3, its lowest ranking since the w/e March 27th (also #3). Finally, things were relatively steady in acquired programming with 'Cocomelon' again at the top though 'Outlander' made its first appearance since the w/e February 28, 2021.

In the first full week of availability of its final drop of episodes, Netflix's 'Ozark' logged a huge 3.33 billion minutes of watch-time, easily ranking atop the chart. 'Grace and Frankie' ranked a distant-second, up slightly from last week, and Disney+'s 'Moon Knight' held the third spot. On the movie-front, the 1998 film 'U.S. Marshals' registered 354 million minutes in its first week on the streamer, ranking second behind 'Encanto' which had 449 million. NBA Finals Ratings (1998-present)

UPDATED 2023: Below are the Nielsen ratings for the last 25 years of NBA Finals, back to 1998. Household (HH) ratings, 18-49 ratings, viewership, and M18-49 ratings have been provided for each year. The color-coding works exactly how it works in the World Series post with each metric compared against each other: i.e. all HH ratings are compared, and all 18-49 ratings are compared. The greener the chart, the better the ratings. Note: I've included both the undercount viewership and revised viewership for 2020 and 2021; this post will be updated if/when additional data is located and/or to add older years.

2022 NBA Finals & Out-of-Home

Last month I made two posts looking at the ratings of the first and second rounds of the NBA Playoffs from 2019 and 2022 and estimating the out-of home (OOH) viewership. Nielsen began including OOH viewership as part of the linear ratings reporting beginning in September 2020, so it's been difficult to make meaningful comparisons between today's ratings and ratings from before Sept. 2020. And since Nielsen doesn't ever provide a breakout of the OOH from the in-home viewership, I used household (HH) ratings and viewers-per-home (VPN) estimations to extract the portion of the OOH audience that is now lumped in with the in-home audience.

Short hiatus

Hello,

I've had a lot going on in my life in the last week and in addition to that, I am traveling until Thursday, so the weekly broadcast, cable, and news posts will be delayed until later this week unfortunately. I will resume posting the older 2001 & 2002 data hopefully by this weekend or next week.

Top Streaming (SVOD) Ratings: Week Ending May 1, 2022

Below are the weekly streaming/video-on-demand (SVOD) ratings for the week ending May 1, 2022.

With the final batch of episodes dropped Apr. 29th, Netflix's 'Ozark' was propelled to the top of the streaming (SVOD) chart for the week ending May 1st. The show logged 2.58 billion minutes of watch-time during the week, though the new episodes were only available for the last 3 days. This was Ozark's best total since the week ending Jan. 30, 2022 (4.1 billion) - the first full week of availability for the first-half of the fourth season. Notably, this week's figure was significantly lower than the previous 2 release-week frames of w/e Jan. 23, 2022 (2.9 billion) and w/e Mar. 29, 2020 (3.5 billion) though it still ranks #19 all-time.

Elsewhere this week, 'Grace and Frankie' ranked second among originals with 701 million minutes of watch-time due to the release of its final batch of episodes. This is a sizable jump from the 465 million minutes that the show garnered in the w/e Aug. 15, 2021 when the season's first set of episodes were released. On the movie side, Disney+'s 'Encanto' remained atop (439 million), and in acquired programming, Netflix's 'Cocomelon' reclaimed its spot at the summit (767 million) for the first time since the w/e Jan. 9, 2022.

Top 200 Cable Reruns: Week Ending May 22, 2022

Note: as an experiment this week, I included an additional chart with the top 200 reruns ranked on viewership instead of 18-49. There is significant overlap in the programs on each chart, but ranking on viewership includes a lot of the older-skewing syndicated programs that never make it when it's only ranked on 18-49.

Below are the Nielsen ratings for top 200 cable programs listed as reruns for the week ending May 22, 2022. Reruns are excluded from the regular weekly cable post, but since there is still value in how these programs perform, this data will be posted whenever it is made available to me. Top Streaming (SVOD) Ratings: Week Ending April 24, 2022

Below are the weekly streaming/video-on-demand (SVOD) ratings for the week ending April 24, 2022.

It was another slow ratings week in streaming with few notable debuts making waves. Netflix's 'The John Wayne Gacy' tapes was the lone exception, scoring 684 million minutes in its first 5 days. This ranked third among originals behind 'Bridgerton' (734 million) and 'Anatomy of a Scandal' (690 million). Disney+'s 'Encanto' again led among movies (444 million) and 'Better Call Saul' led acquired programming (821 million) with a total that actually led all of the streaming for the week. This is the first time that an acquired program led all of streaming since the week ending Aug. 29, 2021 when 'Manifest' topped the list (1.38 billion). Additionally, this is the first week where not a single program reached 1 billion minutes of watch-time since the week ending Nov. 28, 2021 when Netflix's movie 'Red Notice' topped the chart (954 million)

Top Streaming (SVOD) Ratings: Week Ending April 17, 2022

The data represents only viewing within the U.S. and comes from Nielsen Media Research.

Netflix's 'The Ultimatum' led the ratings on a relatively quiet streaming week with about 1.1 billion minutes of watch-time, switching positions with 'Bridgerton' which fell by about half to 885 million. Disney+'s 'Moon Knight' (638 million) and Netflix's 'The Last Kingdom' held their #3 and #4 spots among originals from last week while Amazon's 'Outer Range' clocked in with 281 million in its first 3 days of availability. There weren't really any notable changes on the movie-front or acquired programming-front either with 'Encanto' (503 million) and 'Better Call Saul' (950 million) holding atop those respective categories.
