Below is an archive of Nielsen streaming/video-on-demand (SVOD) ratings organized by program title (A-Z). This post in particular includes only Netflix programs that had their first appearance on the charts in 2022. There are simply too many different Netflix programs to include all of the originals in one table, so they are being divided by the year they first appeared on the chart. There are other posts for Netflix "originals" that first charted in 2020 & 2021, and there are additional posts for "acquired" programs, and for "original" programs from other platforms. The first sheet is an index which lists of all of the available shows with data, how many weeks each has appeared in the Nielsen chart, as well as both the most-recent week they've appeared and the first week they appeared. Each show page can be accessed by clicking its hyperlink at the top of the sheet. (This is not the prettiest organization in the world, but it's the best that can be done as of right now).

Gilmore Girls (WB/CW): Ratings Recap

I don't post broadcast "ratings recaps" very often, but I recently got into watching 'Gilmore Girls' and, after doing some research, realized the ratings had never been posted in full before. So with that, the WB's 'Gilmore Girls' premiered October 5, 2000 with a 1.9/5 adults 18-49 rating/share and 5.03 million viewers, but fell into the low 1.3-1.4 range and 3-4 million viewers for the majority of its first season. This first season aired on Thursdays as a lead-in for 'Charmed,' but it was moved to Tuesdays as a lead-in for 'Angel' in its second season where the ratings soared. That season saw the 18-49 figure leap to 2.4 on-average, with viewership up to 5.6 million. The numbers peaked in its third season, to 2.5 in the demo & 5.8 million viewers, but dipped back down to 2.0 & 4.9 million in its fourth season. Interestingly, the ratings rose again in the fifth season to season 2 levels despite holding the same 'One Tree Hill' lead-out from the fourth season, and those numbers remained relatively stable into the sixth season which logged a 2.4 & 5.5 million. A seventh and final season aired in 2006-07, averaging its lowest 18-49 rating (1.95) and viewership (4.38 million) since season 1. A four episode reboot titled 'Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life' premiered in November 2016 on Netflix, but numbers were never released for its performance. The original 'Gilmore Girls' continues to perform well on Netflix where it relatively consistently ranks in the Nielsen (SVOD) top 10 lists. That full history is available here.

The Good Witch (Hallmark): Ratings Recap

Hallmark Channel's 'The Good Witch' premiered as a series of TV movies, the first of which began January 19, 2008 with a strong 4.23 million viewers. It aired a total of seven movies prior to its first season premiere which delivered a 0.27 adults 18-49 rating and 2.9 million viewers in its February 2015 premiere. The first season averaged a 0.17 rating and just over 2.1 million viewers, and the second season in 2016 held those viewership numbers, but interestingly saw a nice rise in the 18-49 demo (to 0.25). The next three seasons saw remarkable stability, each averaging about 2.1 million viewers and just over 0.2 in the demo, but that growth was halted in 2020's sixth season which dipped slightly to a 0.16 rating and 1.87 million viewers. A seventh and final season aired in 2021, falling to a 0.12 rating on-average and 1.58 million viewers.

Top Streaming (SVOD) Ratings: Week Ending December 12, 2021

Below are the weekly streaming/video-on-demand (SVOD) ratings for the week ending December 12, 2021. The chart below includes the top 10 original programs, top 10 movies, and top 10 acquired programs from Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV+ measured on total minutes of watch-time. The data represents only viewing within the U.S. and comes from Nielsen Media Research.

There were no new debuts among originals this week on the Nielsen SVOD ratings chart. Netflix's 'Lost in Space' held atop the chart for a second week with just over 1 billion minutes of watch-time, down slightly from the week prior's 1.2 billion while 'True Story' (also Netflix) fell from #2 to #9 among originals (607 million to 255 million), enabling Disney+'s 'Hawkeye' to rise 3-2 with solid retention for its third week (527 million). On the movie front, Disney+'s 'Home Alone' (307 million) and Hulu's 'Elf' (296 million) soared to take the top 2 spots, while on the acquired programming front, 'Cocomelon' ranked #1 for a seventh week (835 million).

Euphoria Ratings: Discussion

I've written extensively on the subject of ratings for streaming services, and in particular, the need for both transparency and 3rd party verification. Netflix has taken solid steps forward in regards to the former with the launch of their weekly top 10 website, and Nielsen has attempted to account for the latter with their weekly SVOD lists. But unfortunately, HBO Max does not regularly release their own data, nor are they accounted for in the weekly Nielsen SVOD lists. So when I see articles like this one from Variety I really start to question it.

HBO reported that 2.4 million people watched the premiere of 'Euphoria' on Sunday January 9th, a number that apparently includes both live viewership on HBO as well as viewership on HBO Max. Now, this is an interestingly high number considering that only 254,000 people watched the program on HBO on the night of its premiere according to Nielsen data. An additional 86,000 watched its 11:30pm rerun, so that is a linear-TV-total of 340,000. With this, we are expected to believe that nearly 86% of the viewership (~2.06 million) came from HBO Max? It's totally possible that this is true, but we have to look at this number with some skepticism.

Saved (TNT): Ratings Recap

TNT's 'Saved' premiered June 12, 2006 behind the second-season premiere of 'The Closer,' logging 5.1 million viewers and a 1.6 adults 18-49 rating (versus 8.3 million & 2.0 for 'Closer'). While 'The Closer' averaged between 5.5 and 7 million viewers throughout the season, 'Saved' was only able to hold onto about half of that, ranging in the high 2-million to low 3-million range. It managed to conclude on a high-note with 3.94 million and the show averaged 3.4 million over its 13 episodes. This was apparently not high enough for TNT to warrant a second season renewal.

Cable TV Ratings: Week Ending December 26, 2021

Unfortunately it doesn't look like I'm going to be receiving the full weekly cable data for the week of Dec. 20-26th, so this week's cable recap was done using ShowBuzzDaily's data. This means that the chart doesn't have all of the lower-rated numbers I usually include and also means I can't take any requests for this week. Sorry!

Below is a recap of the cable TV ratings for the week ending December 26, 2021. This is merely a selection of original airings and does not include every single program that aired in the week. Syndicated programming, sports news, and non-original movies are not included in these charts.

NFL Regular Season Local Market Ratings: 2021-22

Below are the full local market Nielsen ratings for all 30 NFL markets and all 18 weeks of the season. This data only accounts for households watching the NFL game featuring the team from that market.  There are two tables below: the first includes the percentage of TV homes, while the second table includes the total number of homes (in thousands). For example: 16.5% of homes in the Atlanta area (or 370,000 total households) watched the Falcons' week 1 game. New York and Los Angeles have two teams in their markets, so each market appears twice in the list with the viewership for the respective game.

The data is in Live+1 as that is the standard that the Television Bureau of Advertising uses. This accounts for live viewing and viewing within 24 hours of the game broadcast. With sports programming specifically, there is virtually no difference between Live+Same day and timeshifted +1, +3, or +7 since the vast majority of people watch sports live. I'd obviously prefer a L+SD rating as I think using L+1 is goofy at best, but this is how the information is available. Note: I'm missing data from the New Orleans market for weeks 1 & 3. Also, I will update with week 18 when that data becomes available. I'm not going to include the data for week 18 because after looking at the report, I'm convinced that it is incorrect top-to-bottom. It shows essentially every single market being down from previous weeks which is at completely odds with the national ratings.

It totally slipped my mind that last week marked the return of Futurama to syndication on Adult Swim for the first time in nearly 14 years. A good friend of mine is huge fan of the show (and she is trying very hard to get me into it), so in honor of its return, here are the full Nielsen ratings for all of its airings from Dec. 27, 2021 through Jan. 2, 2022. I don't know how these numbers compare to what was there before, but with enough interest, I could potentially dig that up.

Cable TV Ratings: Week Ending December 19, 2021

Unfortunately it doesn't look like I'm going to be receiving the full weekly cable data for this week, so this week's cable recap was done using ShowBuzzDaily's data. This means that the chart doesn't have many of the lower-rated numbers I usually include and also means I can't take any requests for this week. Sorry!

Below is a recap of the cable TV ratings for the week ending December 19, 2021. This is merely a selection of original airings and does not include every single program that aired in the week. Syndicated programming, sports news, and non-original movies are not included in these charts.

Top Streaming (SVOD) Ratings: Week Ending December 5, 2021

Below are the weekly streaming/video-on-demand (SVOD) ratings for the week ending December 5, 2021.

The third season drop of Netflix's 'Lost in Space' propelled it to the top of the streaming SVOD ratings for the week ending December 5th. The show logged 1.2 billion minutes of watch-time in the week, nearly double what the second-ranked original, 'True Story,' had (607 million). Disney+'s 'Hawkeye' took the third spot, losing about 300 million in its second week (to 560 million) while Amazon's 'The Wheel of Time' ranked 4th with 537 million. On the movie front, Netflix's new film 'The Power of the Dog' ranked #1 with 470 million minutes, ending the 3-week reign of 'Red Notice' which tumbled to #3 this week (and lost 600 million minutes). Finally, 'Cocomelon' spent a sixth week leading all acquired programming (786 million).

Music Data: Week Ending December 30, 2021

Below are three charts with music data from the week ending December 30, 2021. The first chart includes the top 10 albums of the week based on total weekly units sold according to Billboard (and usually a small select number albums below the top 10). The next two charts document the top songs of the week based on total number of plays on U.S. pop radio. The top chart comes from Nielsen/BDS and includes the top 40 songs of the week, while the bottom chart comes from Mediabase and includes the top 50 songs of the week. The key difference between the charts is that Nielsen/BDS uses computers to monitor radio stations while Mediabase uses humans. Additionally, the Nielsen/BDS chart is what goes into the Billboard Hot 100 formula. Finally, note that the tracking week for album sales is Friday-Thursday while the tracking week for radio is Sunday-Saturday.
