On a busy summer Sunday night, Discovery's NAKED AND AFRAID XL was victorious on cable among adults 18-49 (1.13 rating) and adults 25-54 (1.40) and its 2.83 million viewers ranked third behind NBCSN's NASCAR SPRINT CUP RACE (4.3 million) and the 18-minutes of SPRINT CUP START (2.86 million). It did; however, just edge out TNT's THE LAST SHIP (2.81 million) and Food Net's FOOD NETWORK STAR (2.8 million). The SPRINT CUP RACE also led among men over 50 (2.91 rating) and was second in P25-54 (1.2). At Adult Swim, RICK & MORTY won among adults 18-34 (1.27) and females 12-34 (1.01) and was at just under 2 million viewers. Other top F12-34 performances came courtesy of Disney Channel's KC UNDERCOVER (0.87), VH1's BASKETBALL WIVES (0.86), E!'s I AM CAIT (0.63), and both Bravo's DON'T BE TARDY & the aforementioned FOOD NETWORK STAR (both 0.58). HBO's line-up didn't seem to suffer in its first week without a TRUE DETECTIVE lead-in: BALLERS remained strong with 1.6 million viewers (down from 1.7 million), and THE BRINK was slightly up to 935,000 (from 892K), as was LAST WEEK TONIGHT to 1.01 million (from 929K). It was a tight race atop the Saturday cable ratings with Starz's POWER narrowly beating out Adult Swim's AKAME GA KILL in adults 18-49 (0.66 vs. 0.65). POWER won by a much larger margin in adults 25-54 (0.80 vs. 0.51) and total viewers (1.5 million vs. 1.4 million), but AKAME led in both adults 18-34 (0.87 vs. 0.44) and females 12-34 (0.62 vs. 0.38). DRAGON BALL Z KAI was marked as a rerun so it isn't included in the chart below, but its 0.75 rating & 1.704 million viewers would've placed it first. Also scoring well on Adult Swim was SWORD ART ONLINE (1.24 million), MICHIKO & HATCHIN (0.58/1.298 million), NARUTO (0.48/992,000), ONE PIECE (0.42/837,000), and ATTACK ON TITAN (0.38/849,000). Monday, August 17, 2015

There was fierce competition at the top the Friday cable ratings with the day's top five programs all within three-hundredths of a demo point in adults 18-49. Discovery's TREASURE QUEST: SNAKE edged out a victory though with a 0.52 rating, a 0.62 in P25-54, and just under 1.6 million viewers. Lifetime's BRING IT! and two NFL PRESEASON games on NFL Network all tied for second among adults 18-49 (0.50 rating) though BRING led all programming in adults 18-34 (0.44) and was second in females 12-34 (0.79). Kind of interestingly, BRING IT! and the Titans/Falcons NFL GAME also tied among total viewers with both logging 1.369 million. Over at Disney Channel, GIRL MEETS WORLD won the day in both the F12-34 demo (1.08 rating) and total viewers (2.2 million), and was second in P18-34 (0.41). Lead-in & lead-out BUNK'D and I DIDN'T DO IT were at 0.73/0.71 in F12-34 and 1.8 million/1.6 million in total viewers respectively. The other game, Cowboys/Chargers, was a bit behind at 0.55 & 0.63 in those respective demos and 1.56 million viewers. Over at MTV, TEEN MOM II easily topped the adults 18-34 (0.94) and females 12-34 demos (1.21) with the closest compeitsh in the former coming from the Packers/Patriots PRESEASON GAME (0.79) and the closest primetime competish in the latter coming from Lifetime's PROJECT RUNWAY (0.58). Over at History, MOUNTAIN MEN led in total viewership (2.65 million) and ranked second in men over 50 (1.85 rating) just behind Fox News's THE O'REILLY FACTOR (1.89). MEN's lead-out ALONE actually lost more than a half-million viewers from its lead-in (1.9 million), but performed a tenth better in adults 18-49 (0.58 vs. 0.48). A&E's DUCK DYNASTY again led the Wednesday cable ratings in the key adults 18-49 demo, but by a much more comfortable margin this week: 0.84 vs. 0.68 for second-ranked SUITS from USA Network. Those two programs tied for second in adults 18-49 (both 0.65) with MTV's CATFISH atop in that demo (0.74) as well as in females 12-34 (0.99); DYNASTY also won out in adults 25-54 (0.97). Fox News's THE KELLY FILE took victory among all programming in total viewers (2.9 million), History's AMERICAN PICKERS led in unscripted programming (2.7 million), and the aforementioned SUITS topped the scripted (2.3 million). MR. ROBOT is proving to not be super compatible with its SUITS lead-in, losing over a million viewers (1.2 million) and large chunks of female viewership, especially among F12-34 (0.56 to 0.31), W18-34 (0.69 to 0.36), and W18-49 (0.78 to 0.45). It has been able to hold its male audience slightly better: M18-34 (0.62 to 0.42) and M18-49 (0.57 to 0.44). At ABC Family, week 2 of JOB OR NO JOB was actually up a hundredth in the demo from last week (to 0.07) and ~50K viewers (to 190,000) while two premiere episodes of KEVIN FROM WORK were not notable in either the demo (0.24/0.13), F12-34 (0.32), or viewers (583,000/365,000). Behind LIARS was the series-premiere of NEXT STEP REALTY: NYC which launched to a disastrous 0.26 in the demo (0.41 in F12-34) with 518,000 viewers; losing about 80% of its lead-in. START UP U, which finished off the night, fell even further to 0.13 in the demo (0.25 in F12-34) with 223,000 viewers. Other reality programs performed much better with Discovery's DEADLIEST CATCH leading in that genre in adults 25-54 (1.07 rating) & viewers (2.2 million), Spike's INK MASTER atop in adults 18-34 (0.64), and E!'s TOTAL DIVAS leading in females 12-34 (0.88) with Lifetime's DANCE MOMS just behind (0.85). It also had a top 5 performance among total viewers (2.9 million) behind TNT's MAJOR CRIMES (4.5 million) and three hours of USA's WWE ENTERTAINMENT (3.77-3.95 million). Those three hours led all of cable in adults 25-54 (1.41/1.43/1.41). Leading out HIP HOP was the series-premiere of SHE'S GOT GAME which logged 0.97 among 18-49, 1.5 in F12-34, and 1.95 million viewers. ABC Family had its usual success with THE FOSTERS and CHASING LIFE which were at 0.90 & 0.53 among F12-34 and 1.1 million & 752,000 in viewers. Other programs of note include Lifetime's DEVIOUS MAIDS (1.3 million), two episodes of Nat Geo's DIGGERS (773,000 & 586,000), and MTV's GIRL CODE (437,000 & 305,000).

Wednesday, August 12, 2015

HBO's TRUE DETECTIVE won the Sunday cable ratings in both adults 18-49 (1.21 rating) and adults 25-54 (1.40), but NBC Sports Net's NASCAR SPRINT CUP RACE won in total viewers (4 million) with a sizable win over DETECTIVE (2.7 million). DETECTIVE also skewed heavily-male with a split of 1.34/0.70 ratings in 18-34, and 1.57/0.86 in 18-49. Lead-out BALLERS lost a few tenths in the demo and about 1 million viewers (to 1.7 million), and from that, THE BRINK fell by half to 892,000, and LAST WEEK TONIGHT closed out HBO's night with 929,000. Over at Adult Swim, RICK AND MORTY dominated the females 12-34 demo (1.20) though Disney's DESCENDENTS: SET IT OFF (1.01), AUSTIN & ALLY (0.97), & KC UNDERCOVER (0.96), and VH1's BASKETBALL WIVES (0.94) were not far behind. MORTY also led in adults 18-34 where it logged a 1.34. On TNT, THE LAST SHIP didn't have quite the gender disparity of DETECTIVE, logging 0.54/0.39 ratings in men & women 18-34 respectively and 0.80/0.71 in 18-49. Same can be said for lead-out FALLING SKIES which saw splits of 0.25/0.21 in 18-34 and 0.59/0.50 in 18-49. Both programs performed best in men over 50 where they were at 1.82 & 1.15 respectively. Finally, the finale of BBC America's ATLANTIS logged 114,000 viewers, down from last week's 166K.

Monday, August 10, 2015

ALASKAN BUSH PEOPLE, on Discovery, easily topped the Friday cable ratings in both adults 18-49 (0.96 rating) and total viewers (3.2 million). It also probably led in a number of sub-demos; however, Nielsen mistakenly labeled it as a rerun so no sub-demo info was available. Lead-out TREASURE QUEST: SNAKE lost more than there-tenths in the demo (to 0.61) and more than 1 million viewers (to 1.7 million), but that was still strong enough to rank second on the day. In kids programming, Disney Channel had a busy night with four originals airing new episodes. It was led by GIRL MEETS WORLD which delivered a 1.11 females 12-34 rating (also number one on all of cable) and 2.3 million viewers, building off of its BUNK'D lead-in (0.82/2.1 million); I DIDN'T DO IT  was next (0.79/1.77 million) and DOG WITH A BLOG closed out the night (0.70/1.6 million). Other top F12-34 numbers came from Lifetime's BRING IT! (0.72) & ATLANTA PLASTIC (0.35), and WE's MARRIAGE BOOT CAMP: RS (0.36). Elsewhere, Syfy aired its usual line-up of DEFIANCE (1.3 million), KILLJOYS (1.1 million), & DARK MATTER (984,000), TNT had COLD JUSTICE (1.5 million), and Cinemax was new with STRIKE BACK (275,000).

It was a huge night on the cable networks Thursday as Fox News's coverage of the first REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE smashed all competition from both broadcast & cable with a 5.27 adults 18-49 rating and 24 million viewers. This was also the highest-rated and most-viewed program in the history of Fox News Channel and is about 7x the number of viewers who turned in for the first Republican debate four years ago (3.2 million). The debate also easily led across the board in all major demos including females 12-34 (2.9), adults 18-34 (3.77 rating), both men & women 18-34 (4.41/3.13), men & women 18-49 (6.03/4.53), adults 25-54 (6.64), men & women 25-54 (7.48/5.83), and men over 50 (15.59). This provided a huge lift for lead-out THE KELLY FILE which logged a 2.13 adults 18-49 rating, a 2.79 in A25-54, and 10.9 million viewers. Outside of debate coverage was the series-finale of THE DAILY SHOW with Jon Stewart at the helm; the show ranked third on the day in the key demo (1.43 rating) and delivered 3.47 million viewers. This was the second-highest viewership mark ever for the show, behind only the Oct. 29, 2008 interview of then-presidential candidate Barack Obama which logged 3.577 million viewers (& a 1.7 rating). Elsewhere, MTV's TEEN MOM II stayed strong in females 12-34 (1.38) as did Lifetime's PROJECT RUNWAY (0.64), and WE's BRAXTON FAMILY VALUES (0.50). Other programs of note include USA's COMPLICATIONS (1.2 million) & GRACELAND (639,000), FX's MARRIED (401,000), and the penultimate episode of the season of Sundance's RECTIFY (113,000).

Friday, August 7, 2015

A&E's DUCK DYNASTY pulled out a cable ratings victory on a highly-trafficked Wednesday, beating out second-ranked THE GAME (BET) by just a hundredth in the key 18-49 demo (0.75 vs. 0.74); thought the margin was much wider among total viewers (2.1 million vs. 1.8 million). THE GAME won the night in females 12-34 (0.93) despite close competition from MTV's CATFISH (0.84) ABC Family's MELISSA & JOEY (0.74) & BABY DADDY (0.69), and two episodes of TLC's I AM JAZZ (0.46/0.48). CATFISH did beat THE GAME in adults 18-34 (0.78 vs. 0.68) and led the night in that demo. Over at History Channel, AMERICAN PICKERS was cable's most-watched program (2.9 million) with Fox News's O'REILLY FACTOR (2.8 million) and KELLY FILE (2.45 million) taking the next two spots. Back at A&E, there seems to be a bit of a retention problem as WAHLBURGERS lost ~500K viewers from its DUCK DYNASTY lead-in (to 1.5 million), DONNIE LOVES JENNIE lost another ~300K (to 1.2 million), and LACHEY'S BAR closed out the night down to just 773,000. Elsewhere was USA's SUITS (2.1 million) & MR. ROBOT (1.15 million), TV Land's JIM GAFFIGAN SHOW (599,000), IMPASTOR (484,000), & THE EXES (343,000), and the finale of Sundance's DEUTSCHLAND 83 (107,000).

Thursday, August 6, 2015
