Albums achieve their positions on the weekly Billboard & Rolling Stone lists based on total units sold; a metric which is the sum of of pure album sales (sales of the entire actual album), streaming-equivalent album units (SEA), and track-equivalent album units (TEA). One SEA unit is equal to 1,250 premium (paid) streams, or 3,750 free streams, and one TEA unit is equal to 10 purchased tracks. There are three charts below: the first one has the top 10 albums based on total weekly units sold according to both Billboard and Rolling Stone. The two sites have different sources of data, hence why their numbers are different (but close). A second chart includes the top 10 albums of the week according to Billboard based on pure album sales, and the third chart includes the top 25 albums of the week, according to Alpha Data, with breakdowns of pure albums, SEA units, and TEA units.
Taylor Swift's 'Fearless (Taylor's Version)' - the re-recording of her 2008 album 'Fearless' scored the biggest album sales week of the year with 291,000 album-equivalent units in the tracking week ending April 15, 2021. Additionally, this was the most by any album since her own 'Evermore' in the tracking week ending December 17, 2020 (329,000). Of that total, 179,000 were pure sales and 109,000 were SEA units, easily leading the week in both metrics. DMX's 'The Best of DMX' surged to the second spot this week due to DMX's untimely recent death, scoring 77,000 units in the week (9,000 pure sales & 59,000 SEA). Elsewhere, Justin Bieber's 'Justice' dipped to third (60,000), Morgan Wallen's 'Dangerous: The Double Album' held at fourth (58,000), and Rod Wave's 'Soulfly' was down to fifth (55,000). Finally, Ariana Grande's 'Positions' returned to the chart due to a strong week of vinyl sales, scoring 54,000 units - nearly double last week's 22,600. Albums of note below the Billboard Top 10 were: Brockhampton's 'Roadrunner: New Light, New Machine' (29,400), Demi Lovato's 'Dancing with the Devil ... The Art of Starting Over' (26,600), Lil Durk's 'The Voice' (22,800), Harry Styles's 'Fine Line' (21,200), Taylor Swift's 'Evermore' (18,300) & 'Folklore' (17,300), DMX's 'It's Dark and Hell is Hot' (14,000) & 'Flesh of My Flesh Blood of My Blood' (9,000), and (oddly) Lady Gaga's 'Artpop' (5,600).
